AFTER CHARTING EURO '16 HISTORY PORTUGAL AIM FOR WC2018?
by damodaran mohan on Jul 12, 2016 04:39 PM

Delighted for Portugal and more so for Ronaldo the providential way they won the Euro2016. Why providential? One, their Euro campaign looked far from inspiring and thanks to a favorable draw they had to contend with the only one biggie France in the all-important final avoiding the other biggies on way! And in the final too their star Ronaldo virtually missed major part of the match due to injury. Things looked really gloomy for Portugal minus Ronaldo with the relentless French onslaught but to their credit their defense gallantly held on like a rock. When the French penetrated the defenders the GK came up with some gallant saves repulsing the attacks and on odd occasions when he too failed the woodwork came in the way of a French win. So all in all it didn’t look like was a day for the hosts. Then came the all-important decisive screamer of a shot into the French goal from a junior Eder. It was to rewrite history making good of the odd chances the Portuguese got in a match dominated by Les Blues. Surprisingly the departure of Ronaldo seemed to be a blessing in disguise the way it galvanized the lesser Portugese players to go all out to play as never before to make history and win the trophy for their star player Ronaldo. Now that history has been made and the 2004 loss made good where do the Portugese football go from here ? Ronaldo’s career? Can they win WC 2018? As of now the Portugal are certainly not in the same league as the other biggies like Spain, Ger,

(contd.).... biggies like Spain, Ger, France, Italy, Arg…but the way they raised their game in the semis against wales and then in the final proved that they are not a one man army of Ronaldo anymore. This certainly gives hope for Santos to aim bigger preparing for the WC in the next 2 yrs. Moreover Ronaldo himself too certainly looks a much improved player from the last WC days, more determined and a team man rising to the occasion scoring brilliant Goals when needed to take his side to the final. So with Ronaldo but not necessarily only Ronaldo led Portugal of many other talented and younger aggressive players can certainly hope to make their mark in the next WC.
