Congratulations,

Congrats to P.V. Sindhu for winning Silver medal in badminton and in the process becomes the first Indian woman to win Olympic Silver.

But I thought she had a great chance to win gold. It was 1 game all and in the final game it was 11-10 in favour of Carolina Marin. It was as close as it could be. Sindhu needed to make adjustments at the half way point in the final game. The most important being to come out of the blocks charging. Marin came out swinging in the first two games and in the third as well. Sindhu started slow in all the 3 games. But still was able to win the first game. In the second game the deficit was too much so lost it. The trend of slow start continued into the 3rd game. At least after the mid-game break Sindhu should have come out charging and turn the tables on Marin.

I feel there is a glaring lack of good coaching on the the part of Gopichand. I think all the credit in case of Saina's bronze medal in 2012 and most credit for Sindhu's silver medal in 2016 go to the players themselves. Saina after the 2012 olympics parted ways with Gopichand and hired Vimal Kumar as coach.

I feel Gopichand is recipient of misdirected credit. Also Prakash Padukone was the first Indian badminton player to achieve success at the international level. He won All England badminton championship, bronze medal at the world championships in the early eighties.

In short Gopichand is not best player or coach but milking his All England title for all its worth!

nit picking is your hobby, is it? At least have the grace to acknowledge the greatness of others. Please do not belittle the sacrifices and contributions of coaches in mentoring their wards.

Gold was within reach of Sindhu. At halfway point in the final game it was pretty much even stevens. As far as the playing ability goes, at least in this one match, both were on par. The difference was in the fire. If Sindhu played with the same fire as she did in the first game at least after the midway point in the final game I feel she could have snared a gold. This is where a coach has to make a difference. Sensing that Sindhu has mellowed in the final game he should have stoked her fire to go all out for the gold. Anything could happen in one game and Sindhu had what it takes to upset Carolina but it was as if the final was just a formality and a loss was fait accompli.

Players and coaches all make mistakes. While they should not be vilified, their mistakes need not be glossed over as well. There are Indian players before Gopichand who have accomplished more with very little help or resources and who have neither recognition nor received monetary compensation anywhere close to that of Gopichand. One individual cannot monopolise a sport. Just as we need to develop more players we have to give opportunities for others to coach and shine.

There is a world of difference between Gold and Silver. For starters the honour of playing national anthem at the medal presentation is reserved only for the gold winning athlete or nation. I don't think this is nitpicking!

The most important message os " Do not expect what the country can do for you but demonstrate by performance and example what you can do for the country. Supreme sacrifice by Gopichand who's in the truest sense is real patriot and must be honured by GOI. let us be confident that in future with the government now promising more facilities for gymnastics , badminton, wrestling and boxing we will have more medal winners. Also encourage wider participation with more tournaments in cities with wide publicity and public at large must go and watch these tournaments to encourage these sports and not just fill cricket stadiums.Siddhath mehta

its wrong to criticise the cricket following in India..pls dont forget tat once uopn a time cricket was not even known to pple.it was hockey pple knew about.its only becoz of the administrators of cricket(tey may ne corrupt) today the game has reached tis height in India.tell me wat have the associations involved with other sports done for the benefit of the sport. The BCCI has put in every thing to get cricket to tis level.Off Course Kapil dev n his bunch of cricketers did catalyst the process by winning world cup in 1983..& the administors just didnt loose this opportunity.whereas the other sports associations just made merry on government funds & did wat tey wanted, leaving the helpless athletes to suffer.infact watever the indian athletes have achieved is only due to their own effort & their associations sud not take any credit for tat..But still we can do a lot to improve our sports to attain higher glory..Only let the sportman handle these association n keep the politicians away..tats the only solution

So a population of 120 crore Cant get even a single gold , no use blaming those who partcipated and lost in the olympics and did their best . INDIA IS ONLY A POPULATION OF QUANTITY --QUANTITY there is no quality for anything made in india -- leaving the old tradations and culture developed by the vedic period and the monuments developed by the Cunning Kings . ALL FOOLS PARADISE with ever increasing population --

Sindhu and her coach, Sakshi and her coach and Dipa and her coach all should be honoured by awarding Khel Ratna and Dronacharya. Their commitment to prestige of nation is commendable.

No doubt that you are a role model of being a Guru who not only teaches but controls the emotions and teaches the good and bad parts of the game. We strongly need a bunch of Gopis who can propel India to the top 10 level.

hats off to sindhu hard work and determination. congratulations to her. All credit should be given to gopi also for his sincere efforts and strict in achieving the goal. He is so nice coach to ask her to enjoy the moment rather feel about loss of gold. India is lucky to get a coach like him. Let him coach more guys and girls to get medals in next olympics.

Floor managment and tantrums by Carolina Marin !!!
by BKBohra on Aug 20, 2016 10:37 AM  | Hide replies

Carolina Marin is a very good player and her control on racket, placement and judgement to leave the outbound shuttle was superb. But she was also expert in lot of tantrums- like her extra unwarranted shouting and screaming, taking undue more time in drinking water/toweling etc. when Sindhu was waiting to serve just to distract/divert the concentration of Sindhu and irritate her. Sindhu has to learn to face all this. Carolina Marin was always smiling and oozing confidence which was missing in Sindhu!

A agree, though Carolina looked better player... not sure contribution of her screaming to her success. Even kids at watching were aghast her behaviour on the court. She appeared to be a un-sportive, and made her look less impressive thus.
This kind of distractions should be banned from any kind of sport.
