SHOOTING CONTINGENT OF WELL OF PEOPLE HAS BEEN A BIG JOKE.
by damodaran mohan on Aug 18, 2016 05:36 PM

While culture plays a part with Indians lacking sports culture but the fact remains we are are not yet at arrived at world standards although things are changing for betTer.May be in another 10-15 yrs India too will have sizable medals if not at the top.Somehow the argument of poor facilities or sports persons coming from poor background doesn't wash fully because the likes of Dipa, the women wrestlers, archers etc. from poor background are performing much better than those from rich background like in shooters.Actually the rich are not as hard working as the other from ordinary background.Even in men's wrestling I expect better result and badminton stars too are from middle class background only.In shooting, athletics etc. these rich and well connected people use their clout in media to create hype and publicity and are certainly not as good as they are projected to be except for one or two like Abhinav Bindra, Jitu Rai etc.How is it that the nearly 10 shooters fail to qualify in the finals and the Maheshwaries,Gowdas....etc. fall short by couple of meters compared to their qualification marks ? It is obvious most of them do not deserve to be in the Olympic squad but use their clout to manipulate the trip as tourists mostly. No wonder the squad is big but medals haul meager. From next Olympics the shooting squad need to be trimmed to just best 2-3 and not more.

early start and peaking
by s kumar on Aug 18, 2016 05:26 AM  | Hide replies

We are doing well and many have missed narrowly . For best performance , start the sport at very early age followed by rigorus structured training is needed. For excellence the final push is instinct "the give it all " (see Shaunae Miller's last gasp dive in 400m sprint) .From sustenance point of view state support is needed otherwise good sportsmen tend to follow normal routine for livlihood.

Citizens are main culprit, not Govt., not culture, not media.
by nikhil on Aug 17, 2016 11:29 PM  | Hide replies

I think culture is not actually the reason behind India's failure at olympics. About 80% of people are middle class and poor. so, they can't afford servants for their work. that's insane. May be the author is following that culture of servants, not all Indians. And number of people going to GYM are much less than any other developed country even though we have 120 crore population.
It's not exactly the government, the culture or media. It's the people of India reason for failure. their thinking, their perception, their self-centeredness (of course not all of us(Indians)).
We hate to pay taxes, we hate to pay fines for our wrongdoings, we hate rules and restrictions, we love pampering by politicians. If any try to strict the laws by amendment, then there will be bandhs, rallys, fastings by opposition and other.
After all of these where do govt. get money out of basic needs, if so we have number of corrupts before implementation.
So, We need to change.

Anything could be argued depends on the timely thinking of any individual. In general Indians as well as Asians are weak in general physique, I mean mostly in height. However Japanese, Chinese, Koreans are doing better. Some poor countries like Nigeria, Ethiopia etc they are faring better in all field events which do not require more investments

In fact culture plays a vital role- it depends on region also - in general parents of girls do not prefer their child should play certain types of games. As parents bother more about their girl children's marriage than sports.

Reservations are root cause
by Manu Sinhala on Aug 17, 2016 09:40 PM  | Hide replies

As long as we have a culture of reservations based on caste creed religion etc. and don't foster meritocracy, India will be a laggard not only in sports but in all aspects of life.

you are a typical example of our so called great culture that Aakar Patel is talking of.

Nothing can ever change here. Nothing.

1. The Upper c@s1es are criminals, selfish, f1lthy and deny all opportunities and rights to the lower ones.

2. The lowe3 c@s1es are cowards. They have consciously accepted this slavery.

So the end result is that nothing can ever change.

Is this an illuminating article?. Entire India knows that the culture is the root of the problem for all the ills of India. Even the nearby beedi-shop owner or even a Beggar knows this fact. We dont need an intellectual of Aakar Patel to tell us this.

The question and answer remain the same. Noone wants to do anything about it.

Its so true. I congratulate writer for writing this piece of article. Many around us simply don't want to bend their bodies since they have servants to take care of that. We rather spend huge sums for out of shape bodies haha..
