Objective assessment of India's Olympic performance
by Saravanan s on Aug 16, 2016 11:09 PM

Indian sportspersons have flattered to deceive!! The media also added to the hype saying that we have a chance to get a dozen medals. The sportspersons did not perform when it mattered. We are in a danger of 'Blank' performance. However the exceptions being Lalita Babar, Deepa Karmakar, Abhinav Bindra, Sindhu and Srikanth. These were underrated but magnificient athletes who toiled to keep the Indian flag flying. Athletics (exception of Lalitha Babar), Tennis, Hockey, shooting (exception of Abhinav), boxing (exception of Vikas), Archery and wrestling (couple of them still to play) contingents boasted of champions who chickened out when it mattered. After losing, they had the temerity to blame the conditions and their fitness levels. Blaming the Government will be the next by the Media. There was over exposure in the Media. Next time atleast, the Media should stop giving detailed commentary on the pujas conducted / interviews with parents / brothers/ sisters/friends etc. Now I will go to sleep early and not watch the remaining tragedy.

blame game started again....
by satyasrinivas on Aug 16, 2016 07:24 PM

It is the fact that our atheletes are loosing their respective events one after the other, dooming all our expectations.
To be happy in life one should minimize the expectations.
Many of us do not know the standards of olymipics, and simply the media hype had entertained us to put lot more expectitions than the actual talents of our sporting people.
So, it is not the mistake of players, we should blame ourselves for expecting much more beyond the limits.
We all should appreciate the indian participants for proudly standing in the middle of the stadium and world, and wish them all the best for their future.
Why i say is because, out of 900 crores of population throughout the world, 125 crores of our countries population 100 odd atheletes were eligible to participate in olympics, at a ratio of 1:12,50,000. Is it not great.
So, my dear friends stop searching for the reasons (even the participants). But, think that we have got 4 years from now, to proove our country's power.

More facilities and coaches needed and select ppl with merit only
by rajesh venkatraman on Aug 16, 2016 06:31 PM

Lets make sure that the BCCI supports other sports federations too financially so we can get better coaches and facilities for other sports we will need to win medals atleast one in each sport meaning in athletics out of 15-20 games we need to have medals in atleast 5 to start with similarly in other games where more than 1 event takes place like swimming, boxing, wrestling, weight lifting, under different categories we can train 1-2 persons get them fit and required facilities and send them to Olympics send them to international tournaments etc

Saina, Sania,Paes, Deepika are all absolute selfish athletes
by Rkrishnan on Aug 16, 2016 10:32 AM  | Hide replies

Sania, Saina, Deepika and Paes and Boppanna created such a hype. Our athletes are good only at SAARC and common wealth games. Tennis players like Sania and Paes is successful only because they some try to partner world champions as their doubles partner and win. Saina again can win only if the great chinese players are injured or so. Deepika Kumari complaints about as though she is the only affected. We should salute Deepa for her wonderful performance in Gymnastics, Vikas in boxing, Shrikant in Shuttle, the lone rowing participant. The Hockey team was again pathetic as they failed to hold their game during the dying minutes. The game against Canada and Belgium was like we were kids in front of these countries. The government has done their best to fund these players for training abroad. Countries like Australia do not give any special incentives to their gold medal winners. We do everything possible like 2 crores for gold medal winner etc

You are absolutely right. Less we talk about our athletes , better we save ourselves from humiliation. Paes , Sania, Saina , bopanna and some other s are good when huge prize money are at stake. Sania, Paes , Anirban and others are big names in their respective fields. But when they participate in Olympic games their skill, their dominance etc vanish in thin air. Disgraceful.

Jwala Gutta made such a hue and cry about not being a part of Olympics TOPS progam. The Govt ultimately gave her those facilties. Their preparation was such that even a layman can detect her lazy and off foot game and total misunderstanding with her partner. I was certain that she will not progress beyond the first round and so she was a tourist on govt funds

Dont write anything u like about atleast Leander Paes, he has played his heart out for India during all these years in Davis Cup. Leander is above all the politics love kids like Mahesh or Rohan Bopanna. so leave Paes alone.

What does our athletes expect? The Government is giving enough incentives in cash and kind and provide adequate facilities for training. Do our athletes expect the government to participate and win medals for India?

Its but obvious not that people of south Asia in general are naturally very inferior in physique and so least number of medals come in Olympics to this region..

Very poor show by Indians

How can a country of 125 crores perform so callously before the world? Indians have displayed lack of preparedness, competency and attitude in almost all games.

Callous is the attitude of sports bodies, most of whom had been filled with political appointees who have no idea of what their sport is all about. The supreme court recently recommended that each sports body should be headed by a sportsperson from that fraternity. The movie 'Chak De India' showed the rot in the hockey set up. But that has been the case in most bodies, including cricket. At the Rio Olympics quite a few Indian participants were seeing world class facilities for the very first time. How can one prepare for them if they have not even seen such facilities, let alone train in them. We must also focus on mental toughness of athletes in a crunch situation. Even experienced Indian sportspersons have been faltering. Many of them were very competent, by lacked the mental ability to focus only on the game.
Indians also believe that only education counts, and sports is a waste of time. World class facilities will not be of much use unless we start addressing sports as a worthy occupation rather than a waste of time. In the good old days the Olympics was only for amateurs. In the 1980s that separation ended and everybody who participates in the olympics now is a professional. It is sad that we still send amateur athletes to compete against the worlds' best. The results are there for us to see. Apart from a few committed individuals the Olympic medal quest lies with governmental agencies. That must change for us to win medals. And we have to do it, not the government.
