The huge money spent on grooming cricketers, golfers, shooters, tennis and now badminton players provides them right exposure at international level … and the results are obvious. Athletics hardly has the training & facilities for promising athletes like Duttee. Economically poor back-ground, inadequate diet & lack of training facilities at formative stage definitely deprive several promising athletes of their full potential. Duttee being overawed by ‘everybody being taller than her’ is a fact that cannot be ignored. Formulae based on studies of 100-meter specialists predict a stride length of between 1.14 to 1.35 times the athlete’s height. This primary denominator places Duttee at a 10% handicap vis-Ã -vis American and European sprinters!

though height and long stride length makes a difference . ironically ,the world record is held by Florence griffth Joyner since 1988 ! and she is just normal height 1.7m

Rediff Moderator, I cannot believe that you will delete what is written in sport-book records. Perhaps, you are only interested in publishing downright abusive posts!
sprinting in big occassions is a very "butterflies in stomach " experience a few seconds before start. This happens to almost all atheletes. Only experience and frequent exposure in big events can solve this puzzle. Well done ! Their timings suggest they peaked two weeks earlier which means planning for synchronising with olympics is needed ...

Mr Kumar, knowing your serious interest, I will like to apprise that Ms Joyner's stride-length in her famous record-breaking sprint was 2.04 m i.e. 120% of her height. Happy Olympics viewing!
Dutee had very correctly brought out how it feels to be in such an ambience and how difficult it is to be thrown into such an arena. Undoubtedly, exposure is the best way to overcome the awe and prevent being overwhelmed by the situation, Shobha De\'s personal opinion notwithstanding. In fact De\'s comments are more applicable to the spoirts administrators and the others who had only jaunted to Rio, enjoyed the best on offer, like business class travel, seven star stay, and what not, without any useful contributions. Our sports persons definitely need such exposures and definitely a much, much better deal, than the present, irrespective of the outcome.
