Somdev has defeated many such players in singles who are much higher ranked than him.He once cracked into top 100 also.Hope,he will again be among the best in the professional circuit.Such players should get more media attention and people's support.
Thanks Vijay - U hv rightly pointed out that its singles that count in the world of tennis. Doubles victories - in which none of the top ranked players play - is just a side show. Our media- both print and electronic - make Sania's wins a big deal. Moreover, if u observe their doubles finals, its always Martina Hingis, who has played a dominant role. Pl. dont make people believe that Sania is world class player. I think she is only the best Indian woman player at present.

with due respect to those who won in mens, womens or mixed doubles;these wins are not even considered wins in international arena.only those who won grandslams in singles are given recognition and respect as that is the real game. mens singles are altogether a different ball game as the stamina, fierceness is incomparable.amritraj made it into several quarterfinals decades ago is 1000 times more woth weight in gold than what these days people winning in doubles and ternmoing as big achievement as no player inside the rankings of 100 in singles, play doubles.

But he has reached Wimbledon quarter finals twice and US Open once all in Singles with nil Government Support and in fact reached career high ranking of 16. He along with Ramesh Krishnan ensured India reach semi finals of 1987 Davis Cup. Compared to that Sania Mirza achieved is very little and she is able to garner Government and Corporate world support (ad deals etc.)

Under Vijay Amritraj India reached davis Cup final but since they had to meet South Africa in the final they conceeded the match due to apertheid
The victories by Hingis & Sania are great achievements but her staure as single player is known to all of us.She never even enterd top 50 at any time of her career. She was just an also played kind but made lots of maney by endorsements thanks to her looks & now by partnering with once a number one singles player.

No parent in India is interested to invest their money on girl children -is the reason but Sania's parent is exceptional. Most Indian parents prefer to give a reasonable education and at the earliest see them get married - Indian culture, irrespective of caste and religion.
OTHER SPORTS -Sania keep winning-Great. REDIFF dosn't have info that Indians are playing BADMINTON in Denmark Open and HOCKEY vs Newzealand with victories.Cricket{were we loose}is not the only game !
