Bharat Rathna for Leander Paes

1. The news that Paes and Bopanna have won the Davis Cup Doubles was nectar to the ears! I've lost count of the number of times I've seen Leander playing his heart out and giving more than 100% for India during Davis Cup ties. And the fact he is still playing top-notch doubles tennis after 40 shows his love and commitment for the game and the country.

2. If there is one contemporary sportsperson in India who truly deserves Bharat Rathna, it is Leander Paes.

3. Paes has been consistent in winning doubles matches including the US Open (his third one he won last year) ever since he lost the finals along with Mahesh Bhupathi in 1999. He has been a finalist on four occasions. He won 13 Grand Slams which no other Indian has achieved so far. Again, he has emulated Martina Navratilova by winning a Grand Slam after crossing 40 years of age. He is, indeed, the true Bharat Rathna, whether they give him the official award or not.

Hey. Don't get carried away so much!! Remember the contribution of a doubles player is only 50 percent. It's the singles encounters that count and Ramanathan Krishnan was a better player than Leander Paes any day in singles. And beating Serbia confers on him Bharat Ratna ? Have we gone down in our judgement standards? It's a pity!

Pl read the full text of what I have written. It is because of several such fifty percents, India is still counted in the game of Tennis.
