It Happens even in India, at important functions,in front of politicians and bureaucrats. In India many Indians don't know the national anthem, many who know it don't sing it, they don't stand when it is being sung or played. The people of India first need to know they are Indians to understand what a countries flag stands for. It is surprising that out of the Indian contingent no one noticed and had the guts to correct it or felt embarrassed that it was not being held correctly.
What India has done is right i.e. by standing along with 27 countries and with its group BRICS with whom India has far better relationships and business. Its in the benefit of India to be with so many countries than being with one which commits gross human right violations.

It may not be for you, but to 1.5 billion people it is a matter of pride. It is a big blunder when Indian flag is hoisted up side down. At the edge of every nations flag there is a pointer which indicates the right way up. This is total act of ignorance. It happened at Wimbledon where India flag was hoisted up side down, and Sania Mirza refused to start the game until the flag was hoisted the right way around with full respect. It may not be for you, but it is a matter of pride for us. As for kids wiping there back side, They are babies, they do not know the difference, but you are not a kid but a grown up person who should know better.
