Factual inconsistency - Pele did not play in the 1950 World Cup
by Thrivikram Rao on Jul 10, 2014 09:39 AM  | Hide replies

Under the heading "When Uruguay broke Brazilian hearts", the article mentions "Uruguay 2-1 Brazil (1950) World Cup

Same World Cup, it was minnows Uruguay’s turn to humiliate mighty Brazilians.

With the likes of Pele in their ranks, Brazil was expected to ease past Uruguay for the title".

It is factually incorrect. Pele, born in 1940, made his debut at the World Cup as a 17 year old in 1958. There is no way he would have played the 1950 World Cup.

Rediff may kindly note the factually incorrect statement in the body of the text and if possible, try to correct it.

well pointed out. But this is one of the probably 1000 mistakes rediff authors have done yet. They are a bunch of kids who have no clues what they are writing.
