DIFFICULT TO NAME A FAVOURITE. MORE OF A LOTTERY ?
by damodaran mohan on Jul 02, 2014 04:35 PM

Starting with 32 teams from all over the world now the WC is left with its best 8 teams. While ther has been a total whitewash of teams from asia and Africa 4 each from Europe and latin american nations make the last eight. It is sad African countries like Nigeria and Algeria did put put up a spirited fight only to bow out in the end.It cannot be denied that off-field distractions were partly responsible for their ultimate bowing put and FIFA must come out with innovative plans for helping these financially poor countries with greater financial assistance. May be FIFA should find ways to include India into the WC fold to generate large revenues those can be passed on to the African countries. Coming to qtr finals ,going by the matches of round of 16 it is very very difficult to name a favourite.Even Maradonna will not be able to it. The greatest surprise was the way Germany struggled to get past Algeria! How are they going to meet with the challenges from teams like France,ARG,Ned etc ? In fact ARG and France themselves were stretched to the max !Same story on the other half. Of course Costa-Rica have scripted history indeed and their level of confidence is seen to be believed! It remains to be seen how the Dutch handle them ? May be Holland looks to have slight edge on others but the other three are on equal footing.! In fact it looks more like a lottery with the side playing better on the given day coming on top.

It is great to see Africans rise. 10% of each team has an African in their team, and just imagine if they unite to fight the whites then they will be the world champions
