The recent results of the Indian men's hockey matches makes me shiver that the sport has gone into coma and we are just delaying the inevitable. Performance gap with the top teams is widening. New comers like Argentina, France, Belgium are competing closely with the teams like Germany and Australia. Losing is inevitable, but it is a shame to see players unable to trap the ball cleanly, missing sitters in front of the goal. Penalty corners are not properly stopped and converted into goals. We have forgotten the basic skills of the game. We also should stop over dependence on one state to produce hockey players. IHF is just a 'political akhada' and has done nothing to spread the game to other parts of the country to create a large pool of speedy, thinking players. Our players are still obsessed with going into the circles with selfish play when top teams can score a goal in a few seconds from its D to the opponent's D.
