retirement
by sivanandam lakshmanan on Feb 02, 2014 06:36 PM

only fools will write about retirement of great sports personalities.
They know when to retire better than the meddia fools & ignorant fans.
Because Anand is from Tamilnadu he is not getting the proper recognition inspite of being world champion thrice.
Even Kasporov retired at his own.

playing for fun and enjoyment without any pressure is different but playing top level tournaments is a different cup of tea which requires great concentration and mental sharpness which decline with age. Do you know korchnoi and other oldies get beaten by young female players Do you want anand to start losing to hou yifan and tania sachdev ?

If anand is still good enough let him play the candidates tournament this year and win it so that he can once again challenge carlsen for the world title. I doubt very much if he can do that as there is too much competition from younger players.

he is playing candidate this year.. Obviously, Anand is not the favourite... but, that doesn't mean he should retire.. infact, no one is clear favorite for Candidate.. so, they all shd retire? the question is not whether he stands in the world ranking, the question is why he should retire for no reasons.. he is not doing any harm.. he is still india's no. 1 sportsperson ..

Shock Defeat
by Sceptic Critic on Feb 01, 2014 11:37 PM  | Hide replies

I don't know why rediff calls Anand's losses as "Shock Defeat". That's to be expected of him these days. If he wins, then it should be called a "Shock Win".
His days of glory are gone forever. Too bad, he can't recognize the writing on the wall.

can you say anybody's name before him in singles event ? not this & that games ?!

Re: Shock Defeat

Nakamura's rating is 2803 and anand is 2777. There is nothing shocking in the defeat. Anand is no longer an improving player. The present players are much better than him. But still with all that anand is top 10 based on ratings (performance). Shock defeat is when a player loses to a lower rated player. Do you know when anand lost to a lower rated player last?

You should watch cricket and avoid coming to chess sites. Today anand drew caruana. Should he now take back his "retirement", and unlike cricket in chess the players are invited based on their ratings (performance) and not to appease the head or a state.

Funny you attribute to Anand a trait that you accuse of him of not having! Harikrishna got a chance because the tournament was sponsored by Tata too. How many tournaments are sponsored with Indian backing? If Anand had opted out of Zurich do you think Hari would have got a chance? And I dont see any adverse comment on Gelfand playing the tournament. Looks like you want to show your anger on Tendulkar critics here. Harikrishna is ranked 35 and he still has some way to go before he can be considered the "top". Till then we dont really have anyone except anand to represent us at the top levels.

If you really want to think about the future od Indian chess you have to look beyond Anand. Anand can only fit into the scheme of things as a Mentor or Coach but NOT as a player. Do you think India can become a superpower in chess with just one top player ? For chess olympiads you need atleast four top players

Re: Re: Re: Re: retire

this is an irrelevant point. India has only one super GM - Anand. To become a superpower we need 4 players. Therefore Anand should stop playing chess and allow another Indian player (i dont know how, maybe recommend him as a proxy to the organisers?). How will that make it 4? If anything it will make the count 0.

How Anand's retirement will help india? we have world champs in each age group, we have won medals in asian and other international events.. All this only bcoz Anand is performing at World top for last 25 years... now we have dozens of gms.. India don't lacks good mentor today.. infact, we lacks good sponsors in india to conduct Zurich level tournament where Hari, Sasi, Negi like players get chance to play against Carlsen, Naka, Anand like players..

No player from india is in top 10 except anand.so if anand is not playing no indian can play in the tournament.

So Sivan what is your problem ? oh btw you hv fully exposed yourself your name tells where u r coming from. My knowledge of chess is better than anybody's on this forum.

Mr Anand its time now to say goodbye to the game of chess as your time is over now.

Look at anand s ratings. It is still 2777 which was enough for the first rank befor Kasparov. Present crop of players are too good. Anand cannot beat them but he is still top 10 material. And words like humiliation show that alam has not even seen the game let alone understand it.

Its time for the grandmaster to take a long leave and do a retrospect what is going wrong with his mind. Stop all games for about a year and come out fresh. This will help him and make him look at the winning ways instead of facing defeats at present.
