why Federer is GOAT
by Anuraug Rathor on May 24, 2013 03:32 PM  | Hide replies

Many sports analysts, tennis critics and former and current players consider Federer the greatest tennis player of all time.[a] He owns several men's world records of the Open Era: holding the World No. 1 position for 302 weeks overall;[16][17] a 237-consecutive-week stretch at the top from 2004 to 2008;[18] winning 17 Grand Slam singles titles; reaching the finals of each Grand Slam tournament at least five times (an all-time record); and reaching the Wimbledon final eight times. He is one of seven men, and one of four in the Open Era, to capture the career Grand Slam, and one of three (with Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal) to do so separately on clay, grass, and hard courts. Federer also shares the Open Era record for most Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open with Agassi and Novak Djokovic (4 titles), at Wimbledon with Pete Sampras (7 titles) and at the US Open with Jimmy Connors and Sampras (5 titles). Federer's ATP tournament records include winning six ATP World Tour Finals, playing in the finals at all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments (a record shared with Djokovic), and being one of three players (alongside Agassi and Djokovic) to win seven.
Federer has appeared in 24 men's Grand Slam finals, with ten in a row, both records, and appeared in 18 of 19 finals from the 2005 Wimbledon Championships through to the 2010 Australian Open. At the 2013 Australian Open, he reached a record 35th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final and a record 33rd Grand Slam semi-final.

But it's also a fact that after Rafael Nadal appeared on the scene,Federer folded like a pack of cards. Most of his exploits can be pinned up in his golden period of 2003-2007,where he was up against fading 'stars' Safin,Roddick and Hewitt, and Nalbandian. How one wishes that golden period would extend a few more years or that Nadal would just go away....(and Djokovic too).....

Anuraug - With all due respect for Federer - I acknowledge he is an amazing talent. Pure grace in motion. And definitely one of the greatest player the game of tennis has ever seen. But, I have my reservations giving him the GOAT title. As the name suggests, GREATEST of all times, he would have been, if he had retired before Nadal came into the picture. Even now, I will agree Federer is GOAT, IF and Only IF he can rule Nadal.

Shweta - with just 1 poor H2H record against a player, how can u ignore all the innumerable records which no other men will ever break ?

But I agree,Shweta...Federer's clay court credentials are suspect, and to be called the GOAT that's quite a disqualification.

Federer has won 5 clay FO finals n won 1. Only he has records of playing 5 finals in all the surface(slams). Thats the reason he is all court player and GOAT .

I assume you meant Federer has played 5 finals and won 1 of them...not surprising you dont know what you are talking about...anyway if that makes him an all court player why are the rules different for Nadal who has won 2 WImbledon crowns and lost 3 finals...7 French OPen titles...once each won plus lost finals of AUs and US Open....but he is a clay courter???

It's 'OF COURSE',my duplicate.Anyway,(so called) GOAT Federer has been ruled for much more than this year or last(wherever you start the so called GOATS retirement age).Anyway, your surmise on the (so called) GOAT is based on 2 of YOUR assumptions...one of 'innumerable records' that 'no men will ever break',and the other that Rafa will not be playing tennis at 32(again YOUR assumption)...and you need to digest the fact that YOUR assumptions are based in the realm of your fantasy, and the future..which actually means NOTHING.....

talk about the present. Who holds all the record ? Federer, so he rightly the GOAT now. If Rafa breaks his records, i or rather no1 in the world will have problem calling Rafa, the GOAT ! U also need to come out of your fantasy and imagination that Rafa will break GOAT Federer's redords.

OK lets talk about the present. So first, you need to understand that the fact of whether Rafa will be playing at age 32 is in the FUTURE,not present.Next, about your statement that 'no man will ever break Federer's record....that is also in the FUTURE not present...So stop gazing into a crystal ball and talk about the PRESENT...where Rafa rules Federer 20-10 (and counting)....

The people say Nadal is only clay courter and have bettter record than Fedex only because of clay.
Lets see, Fedex is called GOAT, keep that in mind and see now...
Over all....
Nadal 20-10 Fedex
Clay. 13-2
Hard court. Nadal 6-6 Fedex
Indoor. Nadal 0-4 Fedex.
Outdoor. Nadal 5-2 Fedex.
Grass. Nadal 1-2 Fedex.

As u guys say and giving impression Clay is nt part of Tennis, now search on google, apart from a court, Nadal has dominated Fedex on all court, u dont wanna consider clay, fine, then dont consider Hard court as well, Nadal will still have better record than Fedex.

All the hard court stats and grass court stats you quoted in favour of Nadal has come due to the surface change conspiracy.Nadal would never win a non clay grand slam if not for the surface change. You don't know anything about tennis.

Surface change at Wimbledon 2008,2010 and 2011 helped Nadal and Djokovic win there.Nadal is just clay court player and Djokovic just hard court player.Only GOAT Fede is total player.Nadal wins only on clay and on hard and grass when there is surface change due to ATP politics.I know all the truth.I know more tennis than all you peasants.

Surface change
by HUSSEIN MITHANI on May 21, 2013 10:25 PM

,I know much more about tennis than you common folk can ever dream of.I know for a fact about the surface change that helped Nadal win Wimbledon in 2008 and 2010,and Novak Djokovic in 2011.This was a conspiracy between the ATP and AELTA to revive public interest in tennis which had waned between 2003-2007 where there were no great players to compete and Roger Federer was sweeping all the slams. Rod Laver, Jack Kramer, and the Duke of Kent, apart from Joachim Nystrom and Mats Wilander, all admitted this to me in private at the Champions Ball post Wimbledon 2011 where I was present.I know it was done and I know how it was done too.I will shortly reveal all these facts.
