THE LEANDER--BHUPATHI DOUBLE FAULT
by damodaran mohan on Feb 06, 2013 06:07 PM

One thing for sure is that there doesn't appear any easy solution and Indian tennis is in for a long rough haul. Actually it is three way fight for supremacy among the three main groups --the establishment of Anil Khanna &co. is one point of triangle with Leander and Bhupathi forming the other two points. Three is always an odd number. To start with it is better to get both Leander and Bhupathi completely out of the Davis cup sphere of influence. Both have become old and are past their prime to be of much utility any longer. It is time to groom youngsters and move on. Leander of course has been one of India's greatest Davis cup players but his days are over and it is time for him to call it a day gracefully. Bhupathi on the other hand is more of a businessman than a useful tennis player for India. It is Bhupathi who seems to be needling all the young kids. Young players like SomdevDevvarman must understand that unless he plays well for India in the Davis cup his ‘netagiri’ is not going to succeed. Somdev should first improve his game and serve the country to be counted at least to some fraction among likes of Naresh Kumars,Jaideep Mukherjees, Khrishnans, Amritrajs, Leanders etc. Netagiri can wait. Finally, Anil Khanna and co. should also pass the baton to younger management w/o business interest. They have already enjoyed longest of Tennis power.
