Prediction about Indian chess
by French Cuisine on Jun 01, 2012 04:57 PM  | Hide replies

Unless there is a concerted effort chess will die in this country. India was no 1 in hockey in world,no 1 in football in the world. Both have died and both Indian football and hockey have fallen behind the world by miles. Reason is the lack of infrastructure and financial support.

US produced one Bobby Fischer - at that time popularity of chess peaked and after than it again slowly declined. But US always had a chess culture starting from Morphy and has consistently produced strong GMs.

India has produced good GMs but Anand remains the only superGM from India. People like Anand comes once in a century but the country should still consistently produce GMs.

There is absolutely no coverage of this sport by media apart from small efforts by DoorDarshan and very little access to chess books for kids.

After Anand goes from the scene Indian chess will decline unless there is a more concerted effort to promote the sport.

No Bharat Ratna for this guy, please!!!
by Jagdish Reddy on Jun 01, 2012 07:04 AM  | Hide replies

I saw some posts supporting Bharat Ratna for this guy.
He may have achieved unimaginable for an Indian guy due to his early life in a foreign country and also now living in Spain, I guess.
But Bharat Ratna if at all given to sports person, they need to give to someone like Dhyan Chand but not to him.
It already became a joke, when it is given to Rajiv Gandhi.

all your information is correct, whether the RG is good or bad ; he was killed on behalf of country. He took final decision to send IPKF to avoid the influence of china and US in srilanka. If a war base by these countries will be a permanent trouble for the country. Posthumas Bharat Ratana is given for that not for the individual RG

Get your facts right. He grew up in India only. He is from my school. College also he studied in India only. Yes he was rich though. He lives in Spain because its easy to train and play matches there. If at all any sports person deserves Bharath Ratna its Anand only and not some non World Cup winner

Anand has revolutionalised chess in india.. there are 2 eras in indian chess.. before anand era and after anand era... in before anand era we were as bad in chess as we are today in football... before anand era, there was not a single gm.. Anand motivates indians.. and now we have world champions in each and every age group, gender and other categories.. we have won many gold medals in Asian games in chess... All credit goes to Vishy! today, chess is the only sports india can dominate the whole world.. and Anand have refused Spanish citizanship offered by Spain many times.

Please notice that most of the leading Indian sportsmen take training abroad - that includes Somdev, Poonia, Sania, Bindra and so on. There is some good training in boxing available here. Apart from that none of the international sports are done here.

Anand represents our country and he richly deserves the B Ratna.

You are right Mr. Jagdish.Bharat Rathna has been given to Politicall dogs,Sportsmen who has been paid to play for INDIA.
So giving BR to Anand is only belittling him. Only Bharat Ratna will get name & recognition.
So no need of BR to Anand & he is also such a simple & humble person not in crave of it.

V.Anand is frank enough to admit
by piri on May 31, 2012 10:08 PM  | Hide replies

that the matches were very even and that he was lucky to retain the championship !

But lakhs of common Indians (chiefly middle class) choose to ignore this fact and keep braying out that he remains unmatched in world chess !!

As in many other matters, the Indian middle class is so unsure with its self-esteem that it must engage in hyperbole of every kind with regard to the achievement of India and Indians !

You are right Mr.Piri.You could have been some useless north Indian who will lick the feet of Corrupt polliticaal dogs & goondas for personal gain.
The Indian middle class are the honest people who is paying IT from which the bahus & industrialists, corrupt doogs are enjoying.
Middle class is having morals & want to emulate the deeds of real Sports person.
I am sure you are one of the north Inddian ba--------d who is jealous of a Tamil nadu sports person who achieved more than others with honesty & humbleness against all odds.

Do you wear glasses that enable you to only read selected comments?
There are many who have said that he was quite lucky in this edition, or that the games were boring.
They give credit to Anand mainly for keeping himself motivated and maintaining his calm to win the tourney.
I am not sure why and how, the self esteem of middle class comes into the picture. Get out of your middle class bashing attitude.

Please do not take away all the glory - we have Andhra ,Karnataka , Maharashtra which are as corrupt as the TN .Matter of fact Karuna and family have masters or doctorates in corruption. Rest are not far behind. Each state produced great artists , but they are all far and few compared to looting scums in the country.

i am following discussion on Anand's victory on various international sites... on those sites, some are discussing moves.. some are discusssing anand's nerves, and many intelligent talks.. but indian version of comments are pathetic.. its apparent that indians are non-sportive and can't talk abt sports... and they r good only in regional talks...

Actually Anand does quite a bit for India. Just that not all of it is public knowledge.
India Chess team. You talk as if you are aware of Indian Chess team play chess day in and out without Anand. Chess is played very less along national lines, and when Anand does play, he represents India since he is an Indian citizen.

So what is any other sport worth - for example swimming, athletics and specially shooting and archery?
In none of these money flows from pocket to pocket like cricket football and basketball?

Similar argument can be made about MichaelPhelps.

Yes, chess is not like spectator game cricket or tennis. Sachin Tendulkar is like a cricket Mahathma. I think before questioning about Vishwanathan Anand's 'payback' first ask Sachin.
