Five times world champion Mary Kom
Olympic gold medalist Abhinav_Bindra.
There are several more..
Now you can divide the total by 120 crore population and find out the % of singles winners out of total population.
At the same time,if you for example take a tiny country like Cuba or South Korea, you will find hundreds of sports man who have done excellently well in individual sports.
So,its a long way to go for us.Once Modi jee comes to power,he will have a special task force to promote individual champions in the country.

Donot forget PT Usha who during the 1985 Asian Track and Field Meet at Jakarta, Indonesia, Usha secured 5 gold medals in the 100, 200, and 400 meter sprints, the 400 m hurdles, and the 4 x 400 m relay. She also earned a bronze medal in the 4 x 100 m relay. This is the current record for most gold medals earned by a female in a single track meet in sports history.
She won four golds in 1986, Seoul Asian games, claiming for herself the title of Asia's sprint queen..

Prakash is one of the finest but syed modi was also good winning asian title..his life was cut short by bullets.
why don't our tennis players aim for singles titles ? A singles champion winning doubles looks awesome. e.g All-time great John McEnroe was ranked #1 for four straight years and a great singles champion, apart from that he won a high number of doubles titles ( where he was the main contributor as well ).

First they try in singles. But due to lack of stamina and mental toughness, they finally take refuse in doubles.
Indians are emotionally weak and they feel it comfortable when there is one partner in the court.Thats why our doubles teams do well, compared to singles.
We are from the land of Mahatma and Non_violence.So,we donot have killer_instinct.
Once Modi jee becomes prime minister,Indian players will do well in singles.

good analysis indeed. but then, how is Vishy crushing opponents as a solo player for last 2 decades ? snooker. billiards. badminton ( we have 2 All-England champs - Prakash Padukone and Gopichand ) etc

Not true. You are talking like Kapil Sibal, unfortunately. He only trained in Spain. But he was a champ even before he trained in Spain. And he relocated to India.

in words of his own wife .."t is just that it is irritating to answer these questions. Anand has always had an Indian passport and is still an Indian passport holder. So restating the obvious is a bit irritating.
"I was asked to send a copy of Anand's passport which I did. That is the only piece of information I have. I don't know what transpired between them. Every time you look at him win, you see an Indian flag right behind him that proves that he had an Indian passport and I don't understand from where this is coming and why it has been made an issue.

yup..great analysis! Only thing i would like to add is strength. If you note, no fast bowlers come from India in cricket as well. We are not very strong. maybe its to do with our veg oriented nutrition!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: why not singles champs ?

I agree on strength, which I considered as stamina.
But vegetarian food,I am not sure.Because world wrestling_Champion Shushil_Kumar is a vegetarian.
Further the 700 strong Chinese olympic contingent has been served vegetarian_food since last two months as they are unable to find any meat_which does not contain any_chemical.In case if some chemical from meat_is traced in blood_sample during dope_test,China may get bad_name.So,strictly vegetarian food is going on and they have more 50 gold medalists in the team !
One point is correct non_veg people are more aggressive_then veg_people..

don't generalize about veg. be analytical. hotel type veg is the worst type with refined rice, too much refined oils and overcooked hard-to-find vegetables.
real veg is less rice, more fresh vegetables and salads and lots of fruit especially seasonal fruit. this will produce champions

In China, vegetarian means mostly boiled_stuff and more_over they are buying the organic_stuff for the players which contain no_pesticides.

Indian players have been uptil top 20 in the past in singles ranking.
According to experts if Leander Paes had have continued to play,he would have been in top 20 players for about 5 years at least. He just stopped playing singles and started concentrating on doubles because he thought his age will catch up and he will not be able to make money....He has beaten Pete Sampras and Goran Ivanisevic....
Re: Re: Re: why not singles champs ?

Yes,in tennis money is one important factor. If some body is in top 50 in singles,he has the chance to earn more from participating in mixed doubles and doubles rather than fighting it out among singles players.
Somdev Devvarman last year rose upto rank 73.He faced world no. 2 Roger Federer in the first round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, where he lost 3-6, 3-6.
In BNP_Paribas_Open, he created a huge upset by beating world no. 22 Marcos Baghdatis in second round, 7–5, 6–0. Then he stunned Xavier Malisse (world no.52) in the third round, 6–1, 3–6, 7–6. He faced world no. 1 Rafael Nadal in the fourth round and lost, 5–7, 4–6, after giving a tough fight.
So,he also has the potential, all depends on how long he will be able to concentrate on singles..
watever ppl may say..she still reached a grandslam final.. yeah..she's not a great singles player..nor is she most agile or athletic.. but still does ok in doubles n mixed doubles.. plenty of armchair critics who do nothing but comment on her nationality and figure pls achieve something in life

I second you; Some of us become more proud of achievement of people of different nationality only bcoz they are of Indian origin however those never cared for India; here is a girl who out of love might have married to a person who happens to be of enemy nation but still she is playing for India and making India proud;
