Anand's victory
by R Chakravarti on Jun 03, 2012 10:32 PM

It was a great victory. Gelfand and Anand are well matched and the Russians gave Gelfand a lot of moral support. Now it seems to me that there is nothing much left for Anand in chess and he ought to apply his very logical mind to something else (I don't know what).

The fact is Anand is now ranked 6th ie SIXTH! So hes not even close to being No 1. During the candidates matches to determine his challanger, Magnus Carlsen withdrew. I'm sure if he hadnt then he would have won the Crown. Anand's latest tournament results are nothing to boast about. The last tournament he won was last years Corsicca Masters in 2011 which had no top 10 players participating except him. He has a bad record against even Levon Aronian. Gelfand who was his challanger was ranked 22 before the championship match. Anand had a tough time beating him and that says a lot. It was actually quite a boring match except for games 7 and 8 and ofcourse the Tie Break. Overall there were 16 games played with only 3 games which reulted in victories for either player. There were 9 draws most of them coming in less than 30 moves. There was no fight just safe play. Anand is a great player no doubt but his time is over now and thats all Gary said. Anand should not forget that Gary Kasparov helped him during his last championship match against Topalov, which was also very close. The new generation of chess players have immense talent and fighting spirit and probably this might be the strongest generation ever! Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronion, Karjakin, Nakamura and Radjabov are the Super Stars now and the future of chess. And regarding the future of Indian chess, the next highest rated Indian player P. Harikrishna (2693) is at the 56th place. India has just two players in the top 100 !

Lets not demoralize ourselves. Every player has his ups and downs. Anand had even beaten Carlsen before and rose to No. 1 and after that his fall started. Lets see the next year hot it goes. I am hoping Anand will regain it.

fact is, Anand is world champion.. and rating goes up and down.. doesnt matter much.. and if Carlsen didnt participate then its not Anand's fault.. At the time, when Anand beat Topalov, Kramnik... people were thinking they will take the crown,.. u need brain to understand Anand's talent..

Gelfand beat others fair and square to stake his claim to challenge. Anand is the champ. you seem to have some inferiority complex (if u are indian)

Foolish comment. To prove it:

"Classical games: Viswanathan Anand beat Magnus Carlsen 6 to 1, with 16 draws. Including rapid/exhibition games: Viswanathan Anand beat Magnus Carlsen 15 to 9, with 30 draws.
Only rapid/exhibition games: Viswanathan Anand beat Magnus Carlsen 9 to 8, with 14 draws"

Due recognition shud be given
by AP Aarons on Jun 03, 2012 06:52 PM

Agree with Net Citizen. A world champion for 5 years definitely needs to be recognised by the Nation and the sport that is he is involved in is popular internationally. Our nation seems to be carried away by popularity of just one sport & the performers in that sport. It is high time we give due honour all sports persons who bring glory to the nation at International level. Those performing consistently definitely need a lot more motivation.
