Not suprised - when you start living on free bees which were supposed to be for ten years and you enjoy the same for nearly sixty years you want more and more of the same . it is like Dracula tasting blood.
Stop all prevelages and make them work hard , not enjoy alms.

Pump money & glamourise
by abhi ganguly on Feb 17, 2012 12:45 PM

Kids need role models to take up the sport, only a handful take up due to sheer love for it. We have seen a steady decline of cricket in the Caribbean because of lack of money.Few hours away is America where one can earn good money by playing basketball and if you break into NBA you can rake in millions.
We have got to glamourise Hockey the way cricket is in our country which creates the 'pull factor' for kids to take up the sport.
Media needs to play a part too. Kinds watch on television how cricketers are garlanded while entering 5star hotels while hockey players are put up at shabby hotels.
The IHF (or HI) needs to be autonomous like the BCCI which will help to corporatise the sport.

Media has a role to play
by NIRJHAR MAJUMDAR on Feb 17, 2012 10:33 AM

Media must play a more sensible role to rejuvenate hockey in India.Hockey is played and followed by a lot more nations than cricket. It is an exciting game and does not require you to be in the playground for the whole day like cricket.
Schools should encourage students to play more of football and hockey. These games build physique, stamina and team spirit. These games do not take much time. They affect the studies much less.
Hockey is a game in which we can be among the best.Let there be more Bharat Chhetris in the Indian families.

Indian Hockey.............
by parshuram gautampurkar on Feb 17, 2012 10:30 AM  | Hide replies

Yaah indeed, we must stand up with our full vigour, zeal and skill and regain our position in the game that we had at the time of Tokyo Olympic, probably held in the year 1962-63. If could be recolleced well, we won that olympic hockey gold medal by winning the final match against Pakistan. It was our goal keeper Shankar Laxman who at the last minute of the game successfully saved the goal hit by the Pakistan . Our enthusistic and brave players must not forget that our nation was at the top of hockey and the nations-like Germeny ,Itally,
Englnd etc. etc. which are above us now ,were taught hockey skills by our hockey gurus. It is much regretted that we lost the grip over our national game and continued lagging behind . The nations which learnt the game much much later attained super position than us.
We must, therefore, wake up and make all out best efforts to the regain the position that we enjoyed at the times of Hockey wizard- Major Dhyanchand, Kishan Dada, Balbirsingh, Shankar Laxman etc. I would add here further, why cricket has become so popular in our coun try is just because the indian players playing cricket always gave good results, won the games, big cricket events .
Being an old hockey player, I suppose we need most is strong stemina, good encouraging and knowledge of latest game skills. If hockey players also start giving good results, there will be no reason getting the game sponsored by the big institutions and becoming popular as that of cricket.

Well said Parshuram ji!! Yes, hockey and any other sports will be popular only if it come out with outstanding performances But irony is that neither Govts are able to provide even very fundamental facilities to our players (because it itself is submerged in lot of corruptions) nor our corporate sectors, just to show their patriotic character a bit, are coming forward to sponsor hockey and other sports. Hockey gave Shahrukh a hit 'Chak de' but unfortunately he preferred cricket to own a IPL team.
This is a fact the people do'nt understand that other sports except cricket gives honour to our nation when it performed well. No third country is interested when any two nation plays cricket and there are only 10-12 country plays cricket in the world..So it can be concluded that the glory of our hockey can be regain only at the cost of demise of cricket. i wish for that always..
