India has a long way still: we are not ready yet
by Nikhil Shah on Feb 02, 2012 07:18 AM

A few years back I wrote an article with the title \"Preparation for the 2012 games\" only to realize that it was too early. Later I switched to the title for the 2016 games, and now I am thinking 2024.

The reason for that is we have not arrived at the world stage yet, but we are making steady progress. In the last CW games India won a 100 medals and in the Asian games we won about 64 medals. Typically the rule of thumb is in the Olympic games we can win about 10 percent which is about 5-10 medals.

By 2024 for both Asian and CW games we are expected to win about 200-250 medals combined which is about 20-25 medals in the Olympics as a rule of thumb.

The preparation of the above articles is the right approach. India needs to take a multl disciplinary approach to sports. Meaning in addition to raising the basic skills, we need to buy equipment for Bio-mechanics, consider sports nutrition, psychology and fitness.

Most of the international coaches are aware of this, but the problem is at the grass-roots. High school level coaches need to be aware of the importance of sports psychology, nutrition and a scientific approach to fitness.

A common body in India should be formed for sports at the grass-root levels or High school levels to raise the level of performance in sports, if not they can always be used for students joining the Armed forces, labor industry or a career.

Physical education in India needs to be seriously considered for this reason for future
