However hard we try, we may not be able to win more than 10-12 medals. The top sports that have maximum medals events are Athletics and Swimming. Unfortunately, our genes are such that, we can't compete with the africans and afro-americans in athletics or the whites in swimming. There are some other sports where fitness matters a lot. Like Hockey, Football, Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Hand Ball, where again we can't do much as by birth we are the lazy lot, and our food habits are kind of screwedup (Rice, Dal Makhani, Chicken Gravy erc etc dont contribute to anything in these sports). There are other category of sports, which have been included by the ever-dominating Europeans to increase their medal count. (Sailing, Rowing, Cannoying, Water Polo, Gymnastics). Going by all that, we have our best chances in Shooting, Boxing and Wrestling. Our sports ministry should only care a foot or two on these selective sport disciplines, so as to increase our medal count.

To improve medals count
by Face it Dude on Aug 14, 2012 10:40 PM  | Hide replies

1) Identify target sports activities that we want to really excel (say 10-15 nos). More can be added as things change.

2) Establish standards for each in this target list and rate potential stars against those benchmarks

3) Provide adequate financial security to all sportsperson that practice the target list of sports that meet with the benchmark so they maintain a standard of living. This should be sponsored by state and should continue as long as they are engaged in the sporting activity.

4) Provide financial and other incentives if they out do themselves and achieve higher goals. This should be regulated and monitored by sports ministry.

5) Increase awareness / visibility amongst public about the target sports in the country by state sponsored programmes

6) Sponsoring norms for private agencies should be revised so that all sports persons engaged in the target list of sports get an equal chance towards gaining public visibility.

India will get more medals if these are done systematically.
