Lack of winning mentality
by srikant Iyer on Aug 09, 2012 05:08 PM

Lack of a single gold medal even though the Olympics are approaching the closing stages shows a poor attitude of Indian athletes and sportspeople when it come to a big stage like Olympics.I been hearing about the inspiration providing by bronze medals since last several years. But let me tell you bronze medals can't inspire to make champions. Its only gold which is the real identity of a champion. This shows that India was completely unprepared for this Olympics and media is only hyping things.

Boxing in India

Many congrats to our indian boxers who have done remarkably well in this olympics. This is just the start we all wanted. I am sure they are going to put up a better show at Rio in 2016 and our performances are only going to increase from now on. What we need now is to have more and more children (showing interest in boxing) being given the right directions and trainings. Its a pyramid structure, and with a good transparent system, we will be able to produce many champions in near future.

In the last olympics, we just had 1 Quarterfinalist and 1 Semifinalist. THis time we have 3 QFs and 1 SF. Next time we will defintely have atleast 1 finalist and in 2020 we will have a champion.

Good hope. But it is often noticed that the result is against expectations. Devendro was praised high by channels. Nothing was expected from him. I don't understand why they are sent to olympics? Just to increase the number of participants..?

Winning olympics is a pyramid. It starts at district and Taluka level. If there are lakhs of people at bottom rung we get champions at the top.
Unfortunately schools do not encourage spots. schools are concerened with book mucking and passing of mucked up subjects. They dont undertake personality development. Neither are parents concerened. In my sons school there is a very good system of studies but none for sports.I do take my son for jogging and swimming but I find that children indulging in similsr activities can be counted on fingers. How can we earn medals
The only sporting activity that I see in childern is playing cricket.

you are spot in. During my school days, our school had training programs for TT, Hockey, Football and atheletics. Unfortunately, they just existed on paper and neither the teachers nor parents encouraged their children into these activities. During summer holidays, they used to have nice camps but parents prefered to take their children to their hometown where they could spend time doing nothing, but chit-chat. Teachers only aim was to have all their students pass the exams and show 100% result. Management's only aim was to project toppers, so as to fetch more donation in the next academic year. Parents only aim was to see their son/daughter finish in top 3 in the class irrespective of whether their children liked those subjects or understood them basics well. This is somehting that is not going to change in our corrupt over-populated soceity. I regret for all those missed opportunities now, but its too late. No wonder India is pathetic in sports and in fact we should be proud that we got back with 4 medals.

Flop show...

This is what best describes India's performance at the games.

People, sports officials, media were all expecting at least 10 medals from the contingent and these sports people had been given all training and exposure this time.

Let us come to the conclusion that no matter the facilities Indian sportsmen do not have the mental tenacity and determination to win it all at Olympics. I have seen sportsmen from other countries, one thing common among all is their zeal and mental determination to do well. Indians do not show that and are content to win bronze(on a losing cause), come home, get all media attention and monetary rewards and promotions. So lets stop blaming system for everything, its just the mentality of Indian race which prevents them from becoming winners in sports.

Indian origin students have been winning the national spelling bee in US for last 5 years. So dont tell us Indians cannot compete. I still think there is a big hole in the whole training system in our country. Boxers have given us hope and something to cheer about and that is a lot.

this is exactly the problem. indian children are just told to memorize blindly including spellings.

There maybe extraordinary individual effort like Tintu or Irfan or Saina. But if we have to build a sporting success story unlike this Olympics the effort has to be from govt level, which is never going to happen in India.
