Indian athletes are quite good performers given the amount of money spent by the Indian government and private sponsors on the coaching, infrastructure and salary incentives. With that per capita expenditure no other country including United Staes, Britain or Russian Federation or China can win even four medals. Indian budgets are lower than all their rivals in cricket and chess (both total and per capita), and still they are able to win World Cups and World Championships in different categories. If we spend some money on better infra-structure, coaching and sponsorship (salaries and general economics of athletes), we can produce amazing results. The lines between qualifiers and gold-medalists are finer in reality that that imagined or perceived. Nevertheless, we must employ a good mix of Indian and foreign coaches with equal pay. Chappells and Michael Nobbs are inferior to Gavaskars and Ashok Kumars (Dhyan Chands) because they do not know how to adapt the training routines to Indian physiques. Greg Chappell did not teach the Indian cricket team the technique of fast bowling or batting against fast bowling. He just stressed on the physical fitness, and made the Indian players run around the fields twenty times. Similarly, Nobbs did not give special coaching and practice in fast moves, penalty corners, and tie-breakers. These foreign coaches are more often less qualified in the sport as well as generally academics, but are revered on account of their race.
The media is making so much hype about bronze medals bringing inspiration in future to athletes. Then let me ask one question, what happened to weightlifting after India brought a bronze there in 2000 olympics. Its no where to be seen now.Winning gold is all that matters.Bronzes and silvers are of no much use.I would be rather satisfied if India just wins at least one gold at the end of this olympics or else it would be a total failure.

@Srikant Iyer: I completely agree. Among all these hype, the most ridiculous and funny one is about Saina Nehwal. I bet that in the next olympics, you will not see Narang, Vijay Kumar or for that matter Saina as well in the medal winner list. It is this media which is killing sports in India.

sure it makes us feel good to get lot of medals. but india has bigger issues. corruption, poverty, energy.. If we deal with corruption first, most things will be solved
concentration on game like china top players and USA top players is required however we indians are building towers of playings cards in air that is useless ? be realistic & act now
