India and Olympics
by SK on Aug 06, 2012 02:48 PM

If you notice, big countries like China, US and, erstwhile USSR have done well in successive Olympics. Smaller countries like Germany, Britain, the Koreas, Japan, and France also fare well, although in a limited spectrum of events.

Why is it so?

Big countries use their resources (human and financial) set clear goals, create world class training infrastructure and facilities, identify sports where they can excel, and train with only the gold in their minds.

So can India do something similar, given that we are a big nation, have large human capital and considerable financial muscle? The answer is YES, but another question: Will we? NO.

Why?

The problem, as always, lies at the roots. In schools in India, brilliance in schools is seen as inferior to academic brilliance. A 'brilliant' student does well academically, scores high grades, get in to tech schools, get into MNCs and earn lots of money.

A student who excels in sports and takes time to train receive the rap from his teachers for low grades and the pursuit of sport is anyway related to a govt job ambition.

Corrective measures have to start from the roots.

Congratulations to Michael Phelps

Congratulations to Michael Phelps. I have seen his last winning stroke also ( of course in TV). It was thrilling. His sportsmanship was exhibited in his immediate brief interview wherein he told that he is intending to retire to give opportunities to the upcoming younger potential sportmen in the field. BUT one thing is disheartening me " HE SHOULD COMPLETE 10,000 METERS OF SWIMMING " However, wishing him all the best.

what an achievement. to be remembered as long as Olympic exist. What a way to retire from an international arena.
May he coach many youngsters to shine in future Olympics.
Do we have a single sportsman in our country boasting of 120 billion fools, including me. We are fit only to talk and comment. No achievements and even if so, only against underdogs.

Swimming medals a joke
by Dollar Anand on Aug 05, 2012 04:25 PM  | Hide replies

It is like in field hockey, awarding separate medals for most penalty stokes, most penalty corners, most field goals, most goals saved, most assists, most goals saved etc.

True. and US has 30 medals from swimming alone this oly. we won hockey gold in six consecutive olympics but there was only 1 event to compete for each time.

thank you deepak :o)

and yes, medal numbers show he's successful, but you also have to take into account the number of events he can participate in.
