Let,s understand this first

Olympics is not about winning medals, but giving your personal best. Our problem is that out athletes are not performing their best, like archery, shooting. We have world champions in these sports but performed poorly in london 12. Saina is not expected win. She has done her best, 1,2,3 are chinese, same is the case with Kashyap. Tennis we are not expected win, and that has gone on similar lines. Let,s forget about Hockey, a draw in one of the game should be good enough. So let,s be realistic, world sport has changed, but we are still in 1947. we have to change our mind set first and understand the sport. We are just not good enough.

No point of crying over spilt milk. We should support Saina, for her quest to win the bronze medal! Keep at it.

result
by binoy gomez on Aug 03, 2012 03:57 PM

our media always do hype but the result is different. We only win one medal but before they said, we will win 10 or so. this is not good. why our players do so poorly? even New Zealand win more medal than us. we need to do more planning and do hard work. I still suppot saina but only result is important.

Indians can video tape as well. May be they have done it. Its not about that. Its about who is a better player. Making racist remarks like 'Chinkis' will not help much given the fact that it could be a 'chinki' looking Indian from the North East who could have played against this top players of China and even win. I do not know why rediff doesn't report abuse this comments, afterall its also operated by fascist mainstream Indians. However, nevertheless, Saina's run in this Olympics deserves lot of applause and she has gone a step ahead given the fact no Indian in the past has been successful to go into the badminton semis of an Olympic games. Kudos to her and wish all her the best for the bronze medal game.

Its only cricket that hasn't let us down consistently!

Before the games there was a lot of big talk about how this contingent is Indias best and so on, that average Indians like me thought we should improve on our tally in Beijing. But what happened is the sad reality. 1.2 billions and 1 bronze! And that too now with Govt support, media hype, Mittal trust, tata foundation plus increasing support from other corporates, the story is still the same. ANd laughably, some blame cricket. Cricket is a global game, and in taht we are world champs, was test no1 and have the greatest cricketer ever. Those who say cricket is played only by 9 countries, please take a look at the associates: usa, france, china, holland all have a team. Its only cricket(and maybe shooting) that has consistently given us reasons to cheer. The 4-0 loss last year notwithstanding

Cricket is not a global sport and it played between 10 nations. Olympics games are a dream for any athlete and winning is not everything but playing with pride and passion that really matters.

Nisha I think you are under Nasha... We are bad in every sport because India does not encourage sports. Period. PS: Cricket is a local game and not a global one.

I do not understand y everyone calls cric a local game are other countries banned from playing it. It is just that those who have tried playing maybe found it difficult to reach competitive levels and if we are good at someting we should encourage it ti be the best in it for ever, it is not that Spain will stop playing football now that it is world champ in it. So stop blaming cric and give the sport some due for getting india on the world sporting map.

@Jayesh. Your comment is funny. Sports like Soccer is a global sport. Even in England, Australia, Cricket is 3rd, after soccer and Rugby.

cricket is a game for lazy ppl. all our players have fat belly and they still can play. only handful of countries play the game. even in cricket we are only good at home. we can't win in SA, Australia or Enaland. the best teams.

Slight correction, Nisha. We have Deepika Pallikal, the world no. 1 archer. We had a world no. 1 in billiards & snooker; we have a world no. 1 in chess. As to India's cricket ranking, remember that we kept it only for a short while & lost it soon after. Of course, this has been a strong contingent but has been very much mismanaged. Talk shall remain talk but the facts remain. Today, Sachin or a junior cricket player need not have a job. Gone are the days when a cricketer needed a job; but our other sports persons have to hire an autorickshaw to get home after bringing a medal. As to cricket being a global game, there are no takers in holland, france or usa. By the same logic, how come we have a useless soccer team when the same teams play the world cup & we do not even qualify? Rather than running down our own sport, if it were encouraged; even if the results were not so good, it would help boosting morale of players. If money came in Athletics, we would churn out much better results. I remember Mohd. Shahid running on Nagpur station to catch my 3 tier coach & pleading with the TTE to get him a berth as he had a railway permit & got only RAC (shared berth). Compare with Chennai Super Kings having a full aircraft at their disposal to fly from Jaipur to Chennai (the flight flew from Delhi to Jaipur empty) OR Sandeep Patil going to Nagpur test in CMs aircraft as a last minute replacement. Nothing against cricket; i am a fan too but i hope more people support

Only few countries play cricket that's why its easy to win there.I think the preparation of Indians for olympics is very weak. There should be more proper and good coaching involved in all the sports to do well in Olympics.I think Gagan Narang should be complimented on winning a bronze medal, since the sports in being played by 200 countries in the world.Beleive me its very tough.
