Whats happening to Germany - one time sporting superpower
by Maihoon Don on Aug 03, 2012 10:45 AM  | Hide replies

Since East Germany merged with West GErmany, there is a steady decline in German sporting fortunes. Previously, they used to win in swimming, shooting and a lot in athletics. But nowadays they are languishing behind in medals tally.

Actually, Germans on an average with their broad shoulders and good physique are natural sportsmen.

they are doing quite well actually and in the top 10 , with a haul of 17 medals(incl. 4 golds) , they've won in gymnastics, judo, fencing among other sports..

They are "no longer" interested..

For 5 Olympics they remain in top 3

Also,

"Demographic" factors also lead to a "swift" in attitude..

They are noe, at least leading a "peaceful" life..

before some decades east germany used to dominate & win many gold medals in swimming./ gymnastics / atheletics..that time doping widely praciced by the swimmers, in fact some of the east german women swimmers nearly resemble men (WITH MUSCLES) later they were caught, some of them were banned.(later germany' united and become one).naturally the no of gold medals came down..now their medals tally is low..

Sports In India
by Face Dude on Aug 03, 2012 10:31 AM  | Hide replies

Its unfortunate that a country with 120 crores of people cannot produce even one gold or silver medal even after 50% of the olympic games are over! Sports like weight lifting, shooting, swimming, rowing etc dont have direct combatants and are more individualised. Its a mystery as to why Indians dont fare well even in such sports.

It all points out that the manner in which sports is administered in this country is very inefficient. To cite an example, South Korea fared their national fencing team first time in Seoul Olympics and they won gold. Mind you, not a single soul in that country is fond of fencing or that it has any great following. They started playing Hockey for the first time in 1988 and since then have defeated India black and blue many many times. The population of South Korea could be around 5 crores(?)

Thats because South Korea has a national sports academy which takes all players under its umbrella treats them as professionals. The players dont talk to press or the coach dont discuss plans in public. The best talent gets to represent the country which is obvious with the results.

Will India ever come up with a concerted strategy to promote sports going above regionalism?

FaceDude.. Are you Indian ? If yes, then you are also amongst the 120 crores people who is just blogging here rather than going and ROWING or BOXING ?

Still the events are not over. So please wait. Still Saina, Sania & Paes, Vijender, Sushil, Gagan, Swarn Singh have chances to get any medal. Nobody remembers how you start or what you have done in 1st half of the games or 2nd half. The FINAL medals tally of the country is FINAL. The very next after London 2012 Olympics ends, you see India's medals tally and then make comment sitting in front of your system.

Easy to type, difficult to achieve. Maybe you should first try and send yourself or your kith and kin to qualify for Olympics and then you can say proudly 'Why only me 'FaceDude & Family' is amongst the Indians who qualified in Olympics ? Why not other 120 crore people are not able to qualify like me and win medals like me ?

Pledge to send your children in to full time sports then have authority to talk like that.

Everyone wants medals for India in Olympics but no one wants their children to make carrier in those sports.

by the same margin 16-15 an indian boxer lost also!even india made a official complaint against judgement but it was rejected.

you idiot manish is right. since yesterday i am seeing you write pessimistically here. commentators were clearly saying vijender has the edge at the end of the bout. vijender landed the right punches and the US boxer was generally punching all around without any aim.

hey don..vijender got through the last round only bcos in last round he managed to stay away frm us boxer most of the time, easily the most followed technique now a days by european boxers, moreover us boxer's 2 straight punches were not noticed by judges..n i m nt the only person crying abt poor quality of judging in boxing, even AIBA dicided to look into this matter seriously..And they r going to conduct worldwide workshops fr that purpose..in case of sangwan we already experienced it. It is good fr india that result went our way, hopes that in quarters judging will b fair n clean. n 1 more thing 'Don' it's better to keep ur mouth shut in matters u don't know anything, keep that in mind always...!!

Don't the Indians also deserve some luck?

Let us not forget the extremely good showing of kashyap who reached Q/F stage on his debut and was unlucky to come up agianst the no. 1 seed. He has a bright future, this lad does.
It was also wrong on the part of the media to hype up Deepika Kumari who lacked experience at the big stage. she is young and with grooming will bounce back.

India's outlook
by Ajai Jacob on Aug 03, 2012 09:17 AM  | Hide replies

India is world champion in lazy cricket played by 10 countries.
Cricket is value for money since one can watch it from dawn to dusk. All these other games are hopeless since they end fast.
Games like tennis, badminton and football need a lot of running around. Why play them when there is a 'beautiful' game where one can just stand and score. And fortunately, this 'beautiful'game is not played by most of the world.
So relax and enjoy cricket.Forget about other games, olympics etc.and live like the proverbial frogs in the well.Mera bharat mahaan !!

thinking like this one is spoiling all games. blaming cricket will not help improve other games. has cricket ever asked you not to see other games? still masses, from every section of society, love to see cricket. think about it.you can not force people to follow anything in particular, whether sport or any other field. cricket was nowhere before 1983 but they capitalised well on worldcup victory, organised and managed to spread game well throughout country. its good organising body that is helping cricket to sustain its popularity. see other game's organising committee. do you see any co-ordination? and thats what reflect in events like olympic. and yes dont expect sponsers for games where people dont follow. they are not charity organisation. sponsors are accountable to their shareholders for money invested. will you put your money in something which has go assurance of return? so inshort, concentrate on your game and stop blaming cricket if you really wannna succeed

whats wrong with you?? just stop hating one particular game/sport.
In cricket the fielding team runs a lot.
Its not a beautiful game so what??
who are you to judge on behalf of all Indians. If you are a hardcore fan of football, tennis or any other sport so be it, nobody asks you to watch cricket.

WE SHOULD ENCOURAGE OTHER SPORTS/GAMES IN INDIA BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN WE SHOULD START HATING CRICKET
