Its unfortunate that a country with 120 crores of people cannot produce even one gold or silver medal even after 50% of the olympic games are over! Sports like weight lifting, shooting, swimming, rowing etc dont have direct combatants and are more individualised. Its a mystery as to why Indians dont fare well even in such sports.
It all points out that the manner in which sports is administered in this country is very inefficient. To cite an example, South Korea fared their national fencing team first time in Seoul Olympics and they won gold. Mind you, not a single soul in that country is fond of fencing or that it has any great following. They started playing Hockey for the first time in 1988 and since then have defeated India black and blue many many times. The population of South Korea could be around 5 crores(?)
Thats because South Korea has a national sports academy which takes all players under its umbrella treats them as professionals. The players dont talk to press or the coach dont discuss plans in public. The best talent gets to represent the country which is obvious with the results.
Will India ever come up with a concerted strategy to promote sports going above regionalism?

strength endurance are key for individualised sports. we in india give less importance to health as family heads are burdened with more responsibilites.
children don't have proper nourishment & with economic conditions even members of national team looks WEAK when compared to our competitors.
so don't even think about medal if they put up good show thats more then enough.
After all the defeats to the Indian team and when they reach the bottom of the pool, they will blame the coach. This is typical of Indian hockey association.
we are a free country,we will pass the ball where ever we want, run whenever we want to and wherever we want to,no one questions us.pity u nobbs u didnt get it all this time.
It was a very disappointing performance by the Indians who just did not have the pace or power to overwhelm the Kiwis. Rather, age-old errors seemed to creep into India's game with badly positioned forwards inside the striking circle, over-dribbling and lack of variety in their attacks." I watched the entire match. India did not play modern hockey at all. But I will blame the coach more than the players for this. I did not feel that Indians trained under a foreign coach (with due respect to Indian coaches). And I did not see the coach doing anything special during the match (not even during the break) or coming up with a new plan/attacking strategy, except changing the goalkeeper. I also think that Indians considered NZ as weaker opponent and that's why they were lazy in the field and not hungry enough to win the game. NZ were just opposite. I haven't watched Indian hockey since quite some time but if this is Indian hockey team then I have no more hope in this Olympics although I wanted India to win at least bronze in this sport which is our national game. Its so s-h-a-m-e-ful!

All credit goes to Gill Who bought our hockey to this level by promoting only punjab players. Hats off to MR.Gill

we dont have the mentality to stick to a plan. it is same at work and play. we feel we are better than our brother. that is why we cant win consistently in cricket, we dont follow the foreign coach's plan, only rely on individual brilliance. if we win in hockey the game will become popular. same with football and the same with olympic medals. we are like nike slogan - just do it.
