GOAT
by Anand Vijayan on Nov 24, 2011 05:54 PM

Rod Laver though a great player cannot be called greatest of all time as three of the surfaces in his day were grass. Pete Sampras played the likes of Becker and Edberg, Lendl at the tail end of their careers and never won the French so not the GOAT. By sheer number of match wins Connors and Lendl are the top two but they failed at the French and Wimbledon respectively. Fed is nearest to be called GOAT by the fact that he has won 16 slams, and on all four surfaces. Nadal has some catching up to do.

LEGEND FEDERER DEMOLISHES NADAL
by HUSSAIN MITHANI on Nov 23, 2011 08:53 PM

what an embarassing match for nadal. isn't federer supposed to be done with his career according to Nadal fans. A 30 yr old federer crushes a 25-yr old Nadal. Nadal is done. Nadal will be lucky to get past Tsonga and if he does, he will face Novak in the semis who he can't even beat. Sixth title for federer is looking good. This is what legends are made of and even at his age, he is playing fantastic. Keep doing what you do federer, You are the greatest ever.

Tennis Question?
by Hari on Nov 23, 2011 09:31 AM  | Hide replies

This is just reciprocation of justice in kind by Fed who was badly beaten in the hard courts of Indian Wells 6-3, 6-2 by Nadal. Even though Fed is doing this at 30 and well past his perfect tennis days 5 years back, Nadal had managed to beat him just as fine in Fed's best 06-09 period. So I guess the greatest player question will remain inconclusive irrespective of the result of this mauling.

Indoor hard courts suit Federer while they don't suit Rafa's game at all. I would be surprised if Rafa will ever win this title on this indoor court.

To me the greatest player ever is between Rod Laver or Pete Sampras. My pick will be piston Pete. Federer's 16 does not convince me to call him the GOAT.

If Rafa plays a 5-setter on an outdoor court tomorrow, he will own Olderer; I am sure.

Not Pete. GOAT has to win all slams.

Where is it written GOAT has to win all slams? Federer won French luckily too. It's the game that matters, and Piston Pete is naturally talented and all class, more than that he competed against the players like Agassi, Becker, Edberg, Rafter, Courier, Chang, Kuerten, Stich, Krajicek, Ivanisevic, Kafelnikov, Bruguera, Muster, Moya, Korda etc. the list goes on, on and on.

Neither is it 'written' that the GOAT can't have an inferior record against one particular player. Secondly the list of players you have produced here didn't play against Fed so the comparison is hollow. The ones he played against don't look to be as good as this list may be because of Fed's complete domination between 2003-2008. The game Fed has is superior in quality than Pete. Now whether Fed is the GOAT I can't say because I haven't been around for last 100 years, but I can certainly say based on what I have seen in last 25 years, Fed is the best player I have seen playing.

btw Rafa is still 17-9 up against Olderer, while 4 out of those 9 wins came on this indoor court.

I believe the best chance Rafa had to beat Federer on this court was last year where he was in the best of his form.

Pete could be a GOAT - Pete at his best would have beaten RF or Nadal in wimbledon many times over. But requirement of winning all slams is a moot point. But domination of a sport for 9 straight years is a hallmark of any GOAT.

As for GOAT debate - RF, and RN, these players are as unpredictable as they come and I remember a time when Rafa was beaten in roland Garros and withdrew from Wimbledon. Many venerable tennis critics were writing epitaphs of Rafaels career as finished due to overly physical game. Then how he bounced back in 10 with 3 slams. Same goes to Fed. So debate 5 years from now when they are retired then try reach a conclusive decision!!

12 out of 17 wins for Rafa came on clay...So whats ur point? Rafa by far will be a clay court king and will manage to get another slam or two if he keeps his fitness up.....But mark my word, he will be beaten by Djoker or upcoming players on all other surfaces....He beating Federer does not make him a better hard court or grass court player....he will still remain a clay court specialist who worked hard on other surfaces....rafa can never beat federer in indoor corts the same way as Federer can never beat rafa on clay court.....But one thing Rafa cant match is the consistency of Federer on ALL courts......And in the end the records speak for themselves....Not just the 16 slams but the consistent performances on all courts which no tennis fan will ignore(unless a stupid Rafa fan like you will start finding reasons to ignore it)....I just call it sour grapes.

Accept defeat graciously instead of finding reasons for comparisons and demeaning the greatness of the two biggest champions the sport has ever seen.

will beat your fans up black and blue. A very disappointing year for you and your fans, a new low per your standards. I am not sure if we can see the old Rafa back, the resilient warrior who plays with precision and accuracy, which is totally missing these days.

Watched the match; daddy Federer is sublime and owned Rafa totally.

Dont be haste in writing obituaries of great players. Davis cup final and a whole new year awaits for Nadal who is ahead of Fed in GS, Masters haul at the same point in career.

What worrys Nadal fan such as me is the emergence of Murray as a genuine contender. If he raises his game just as Djokovic did, Fed Nadal will be 3rd and 4th in rankings. Sad, but thats just the way top 4 in Tennis works these days.
