One thing which stood out was he was the guy who toughed it out. Every time someone else came up with blows which usually end up winning fights against other opponents Smokin Joe withstood it and retaliated in his own way to win the fight. The best example was in Thrilla in Manila fight where he drove Ali to the brink and literally fought blind for the last couple of rounds. While ali's superior technique and physique gave him a distinct advantage he made him earn his victory literally in blood.
You do not see such stuff in boxing anymore. Great sportsman and one of the greatest heavyweight champions ever.

No . The movie was partially based on Rocky Marciano , another boxer . Joe Frazier appeared in this movie in a small cameo .

I checked Wikipedia . It seems all of us are right . Stallone was inspired by Rocky Marciano , the fights were based on Muhammed Ali - Wepner bouts and two incidents were taken from Frazier's life . Hows that for a please all solution !

What he has said??? "The world has lost a great champion," Ali said in a statement on Monday. "I will always remember Joe with respect and admiration. My sympathy goes out to his family and loved ones."
