Her contribution is Great............
by shakil on Jun 22, 2011 09:29 AM  | Hide replies

She may have lost in First round this time BUT we must adnit that it is Sania who popularise/promoted Tennis in India.
Prior to 2005 we were NOT knowing Tennis beyond Wimbledon.
Likes of Nadal, Federer would have gone UNNOTICED.
Many young players like Saina Nehwal, Somdev, Pankaj Advani etc took inspiration from her.
More over, she is NOT over-rated, She reached Q/F at 2005 U.S Open.
She is the lone women contender in singles from India.

No doubt Sania is a popular figure in India but I dont agree with you that prior to 2005 we were not knowing tennis beyond wimbledon. We Indians are following tennis since years. Infact I started watching tennis since 1990 when Graf was in full form. In 1990 Star Sports started showing live matches of French, Wimbledon, US and Australian Open starting from first round. Tennis was made popular by Vijay Amritraj who was a tough competitor to Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors. They were called ABC of tennis in 1970s and 1980s. (My father gave me this information) Why will Saina take an inspiration from Sania when she has nothing to do with tennis. Before Saina Nehwal Gopichand and Prakash Padukone made badminton popular. Only Somdev is a tennis player. Pankaj Advani is a snooker player not a tennis player. How can you forget Sampras, Agassi, Becker who were legends during their times. Nadal and Federer are recent legends. I think you are not noticing great legends which the tennis produced. No doubt Sania Mirza made India proud and she popularised the sport in India to a certain extent but she is not the only person to do it. You can say that she regenerated tennis in India. Before Sania Leander Peas and Mahesh Bhupathi were popular in India and they already had plans to set a tennis training institute in India.Almost every Indian knows that Steffi Graff Won all grandslams in a year including Olympic gold medal and she was number one for a long time. She has 22 grandslams to her name.

How could this happen. Isn't she one of the greatest. Shouldn't the indian govt send an envoy to convey their sympathies ? My god have we forgotten basic human dignity ?

Lost ......But,
by Kd Narang on Jun 22, 2011 09:23 AM

Sania lost but she made the Big impression at Pre-Wimbledon party.
Dress and her look was stunning.
She was Next only to Sharapova.
It is Sad that she could not make it to Q/F this time.
Best luck for Doubles.

sania at wimbledon
by jayakumar kumar on Jun 22, 2011 09:22 AM

She has been overrated by the indian media. she doesn't seem committed enough. in an cnn new channel show, azarenka has said she practices 8 hours everyday and she is still ranked outside the top 10. imagine sania doing that. she is just a media darling that's all. nowwhere she can be compated to PT USHA, SHINY ABRAHAM OR EVEN SAINA NEHWAL. NOW AT 24 HER CAREER IS ALREADY GOING DOWNHILL. SHE CAN NEVER, I REPEAT NEVER WIN A GRAND SLAM, LET ALONG GO BEYOND THE 3RD ROUND..
