The Tragedy of Argentinian Football
by Yakoub Khan on Jun 15, 2011 09:17 PM  | Hide replies

They are at best, like some other 3rd world countries, an exporter of world class talent.
Somehow, the ability to build a true "team" eludes them.
In Man Utd., the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, with Argentina, however, it is the opposite.
When will they ever get it right?

Messi, Higuain, Tevez, Milito, Kun Aguero all are great players and super stars but Argentina does not have a great coach/manager or captain/leader who could get this unit together into a world beating side.

Maradona is a great player but an average coach and was not able to get these super star players together in the last world cup.

May be because the players mentioned above play too much of club football and never get a chance to play together and understand eachother.

I think unless these players play considerable number of matches together, there will be lapses in the Argentine side that other teams can take advantage of like Germany did in the previous FIFA world cup.

Hope Argentine team breaks this barrier in Copa America, World Cup and other international competitions.

There are a few points to be considered:
1. There is no stability in the manager's job
2. Their defense is pathetic
3. In the last WC, they were tactically naive
4. Playing too much of club football is a reality for any country. It cannot be an excuse for their poor performances
5. The names you mention: Tevez, Aguero, Milito etc. are indeed top players but:
a) When and how will they gel as a team?
b) In your list of top players, notice that all the players mentioned are forwards. You did not name any midfielder, defender or goalkeeper. This shows your top of the mind recall & rightly indicates their lack of personnel in these key positions. Also refer to point 1 above.
I may be wrong, but, in some ways, they remind me of Arsenal FC.

Comparing Ronaldo and Messi is like comparing Ponting and Tendulkar..
The former is almost equally talented and hard working as the latter, however, the latter's humility and sportsman makes him better than the former..

When Ronaldo got the WPOTY,he said"I'm the 1st,2nd,3rd best player in the world"
When Messi got,he said"I'm just lucky to be part of this team with so many good players"

Sir,
Spot on. Well said.
Humility is the greatest quality of a genius. It is true in every walk and aspect of life.
Messi. I feel, should be a role model for his talent, achievements and humility.
