(...contd)
...England is yet to shake of their tag of being a "long ball team".

Therefore, there is a chance that the domination of EPL clubs may decline if restrictions on their foreign imports and consequent costs are imposed. This decline in Europe may lead to lesser revenues.

Hence, finding the right balance of well groomed local talent supplemented by international stars and critically, having depth in reserves- considering the number of games and tournaments that a top club has to play, besides tuning up their academies to acceptable T&T levels may be the way forward.

This development, as reported in the article, would serve as a major cost cutting measure in terms of savings from buying more expensive, established players, especially from abroad & from exorbitant wage bills.

As far as nurturing homegrown talent is concerned, it is a step in the right direction. The German FA began this project in the year 2000, when all clubs were told to have a strong academy structure in place. It has reaped great dividends for them in the development of the likes of Mueller, Ozil, Khedeira etc.

An important reason for this has been the strength of their foreign players like C Ronaldo, Vidic, Xavi Alonso etc. , the number of home grown players in La Liga and the Serie A are over 62% whereas the number in the EPL is much lesser. The need of imports in the EPL is largely based on the perception that foreign players are technically and tactically (T&T) better than English ones. To back up this thought, it is argued that the English national team, inspite of a fantastic football structure including robust clubs, infrastructure, fan base etc., have, mainly due to their lesser T&T attributes, been a relative failure vis-a-vis the other heavyweights such as Italy, France, Brazil etc. England is yet to shake off th
