biggest surprise
by biswanath roy on Jun 04, 2011 01:59 PM

the biggest surprise is how can a chinese (lady) player reach to successive women's singles finals in 2011.china has no history of having good tennis players in the last 50-60 years. how the hell they have come on the scene? we indians are jealous of any chinese achievement, makes us feel inferior.

Lost ... But we must admit.
by shakil on Jun 04, 2011 10:18 AM  | Hide replies

Sania Lost , BUT we must admit that she created interest in Tennis.
Till 2005, We( Indians) were NOT knowing Tennis beyond Wimbledon.
Likes of Nadal and Federer would have gone unnoticed had Sania Not been there.
She is average in Singles, But popularise/promoted Tennis in India.
We enjoy Watching Nadal, Federer, Djoko etc, this is resultant of awareness created by Mirza.
Thanks Mirza and congratulation for Reaching Final at Grand Slam.
Shakil and friends,
Chembur- Mumbai.

1. Ramanathan Krishnan reached the Semi-finals of Wimbledon (in SINGLES) in 1960 and then 1961.

2. Vijay Amritraj reached quarter finals of Wimbledon in 1973 and 1981, and quarter finals of US Open in 1973. (All SINGLES)

3. Ramesh Krishnan reached quarter finals of Wimbledon in 1986 and quarter finals of US Open twice (1981 and 1987). (All SINGLES)

4. Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes won several Grand Slam Tournaments (in Doubles and Mixed Doubles) and even today (both are in their late thirties) are within the Worlds Top Ten players in Doubles.

5. Leander Paes won a bronze medal in Atlanta Olympics. The only medal for India in that competition.

These are the real acheivers in tennis. Sania Mirza is a big hype.

Yes. You are absolutely right. To my knowledge she was the first teen from india to have played outside the country Tennis and got recognised. Even the country was recognised as having a lot of potential tennis players. So nothing wrong in Sania and Vesnina losing the final. All players were quite talented else they could not have traveled till Final. For achievement Talent and Tactic are important. Sania and Co., had lot of talent but the opponents had lot of Tactic.

Good Luck next time Sania. Dont loose heart. Failure are footsetps for success and you will definitely achieve it soon.

Ramanathan Krishnan, Ramesh Krishnan (in 1979) and Leander Paes (in 1990) WON the Junior Wimbledon Championships.

So Sania Mirza is certainly not the first teen to play outside India.

So Nadal and Federer need a Sania to get noticed..!! Thats news to me. And what about players like Rod Laver, Becker, Borg, McnRoe ? Looks like u never even heard of them. For ur kind info Federer won his first grand slam even before Sania made ripples.

mr surya das you criticize sania for getting knocked out in the 2nd/3rd round of the singles(grand slams) event. why do not apply the same criteria to bhupathi & paes, these two jokers have not participated in singles event for the last 15 years. in fact, did not have the guts to do so,as they would have been knocked out in the 1st round itself.

Apte--aaizavadiya!! Lee and Hesh--- were world no.1 in doubles for a period of time. They would have won a lot more if they had stayed as a team but unfortunately they seperated. 100% they have earned more laurels than this good for nothing Sania.
