India is wrong on its part to press for the removal of Dow Corning as an Olympic sponsor. Dow Corning was in no way responsible for the union carbide tragedy of 1984 as it has bought Union Carbide’s assets only in 2001. It’s like when you purchase a second hand car and you are being blamed for an accident in which the first was involved. Secondly Indian government had accepted Union Carbide’s instant settlement and then senior officials personally escorted the chief of Union Carbide out of India despite the presence of independent lawyers from the US urging the Indian Govt to fight the case in US Courts. 3rd can any Indian company step up to the plate and offer the kind of money/sponsorship that dow corning is offering. India should come out of the self imposed illusion that it is a “World Power” and can dictate its terms to other countries. Its very easy to keep digging up ghosts of the past and keep crying about it, but the truth is we did not take the right steps at the right time to make sure that the guilty are punished.
