How does our standard compare with Olympics winner
by Narayanan Mahalingam on Oct 17, 2010 01:35 PM

All this euphoria about Games medal tally is fine. It would be helpful if the media can compare our Gold medal winning numbers with the numbers of the winners in the last Olympics. That would show the standard of competition our athletes competed in.

We would not able to match these even in Asian Games.

We are on the right path, but let us get deluded about the standard of Commonwealth Games

different criteria for standings in medals table
by Jugal Ahuja on Oct 16, 2010 11:55 AM  | Hide replies

It is not understood as to what is the criteria of final standings in the medals table, whether it is on the number of gold medals won, or is it on the number of total medals won? In the Beijing 2008 Olympics USA won a total tally of 110 medals, including 36 gold, whereas China won a total of 101 medals with 51 gold, but the Indian media @ that time projected USA as first, due to the more numbers of total medals it had won.Similarly in Athens 2004,Russia had more number of total medals, but lesser gold ,compared to China which had 4 more golds, but 10 lesser total medals, & again the Indian media there too placed Russia second to USA.But now in CWG Delhi case India with 38 golds & 101 total, is shown second & England third with 37 gold & total 142 medals. The difference in total medals in the case of India-England is 41 in favour of England whereas it was 9 & 10 in favour of USA & Russia. It appears the criteria of final standings have no basis ,it depends on the concerned country. When it comes to China ,India's affinity(jealousy) for that country is well known.

The silver and bronze medals are like consolation prizes. It is gold only that matters in Olympics. So even if Team A wins 200 medals with 25 gold and Team B just wins 26 gold. Team B is ranked higher.

Pecking at the order

How can they be second in the final pecking order, when the Ozzies with 170 medals are #1, and the Brits in #2 position with a total of 141 medals, compared to India's 101 total medals?
Apparently the ignoramus idiots at Rediff are still in serious need of some math tutoring.
