Lets hope for a turnaround in Indian sports
by Rajan S on Oct 08, 2010 11:14 PM  | Hide replies

I don't want to get over optimistic about our performance in this cwg. First of all, many top athletes are missing from this year's cwg. It was the first time, India have ever won a gymnastic medal in its history. So, i believe, it shows the lack of competition rather than a revival in indian gymnastics field. Nevertheless i take this opportunity to congratulate the bronze medal winner and all the other medal winning indain athletes.

The Second most important reason why i believe so is that, both in london and melbourne cwg in 2002 and 2006 respectively, we had won close to 50 medals and finished 4th both times and there after in the beijing olympics, which came later in 2008 saw india winning only 1 gold and 2 bronze i think. So it was proved that all the exploits in the london and melbourne cwg was not an indication of any huge transformation taking place in the indian sporting arena.
I too would be extremely happy and proud, if this cwg performance, takes us in the right direction for the future. But with the caliber of men at the helm of all the sporting federations in india, i know that am hoping against hope

Ashish Kumar also won a silver today in vault event of Gymnastics..Indian olympic sports is really changing because of 2012 vision of Mittal Champions Trust which is pumping money to Indian Olympic sports to produce world beaters.Indian corporates have no much credit to it.Laksmi Mittal,Chairman of world's largest steel producer,Arcelor Mittal was very disappointed with India's performance in Athens Olympics and started this trust with help of his brother in law Amit bhatia. So far,the trust is sponsoring sports persons in Shooting, boxing, wrestling,Tennis,Badminton,Weight Lifting,Gymnastics, etc and the result is visible now..
Mittal also instantly gifted 1.5 cr rs to Abhinav after winning gold at Beijing Olympics..so,we can expect an improved performance of India in London Olympics with atleast 5-6 golds(Abhinav,Gagan and Mary Kom are almost sure, rest others can emerge in London)..

Before the start of 2008 olympics, it was predicted that our shooters will win bagful of medals in beijing. Only abhinav bindra claimed gold. His father himself was a crorepati. He said later that he didn't get much help from the govt. Bcoz he was so rich, he could afford to send his son to england, usa etc and provide him with quality training and exposure. If Mittal champions trust is involved in such an act, it is laudable. But don't forget other countries will also be doing the same and infact many top nations had started to prepare their athletes for 2010 olympics even before the beijing olympics.

Gagan has to prove it in olympics. He has done well in many other international competitions. Mary Kom is a sure hope. But these will make only one or two or three medals. We have to make hundreds of such athletes to make a mark in an event like olympics.

If we can get some 6 or 7 gold medals in 2012 london olympics, i think india can come in the top 15, which then will be a commendable effort
If we didn't bring in able persons at the helm of all the sporting federations, all the money which the corporates are said to be pumping, may run in to wrong hands.
Just think about the state of affairs in indian sports. A man like kalmadi, is still the sports authority of india (SAI)president

I feel Paes was not able to play with his heart out with both Mahesh and Sania, both for different reasons, the bonding was not natural perhaps which is very essential for success in team game..
