What was new and different???
by straight forward on Oct 05, 2010 02:31 PM

I agree with this article. What was new or different in this show? At such an exhorbitant expense was it anywhere comparable with Beijing opening or closing?
Even the train show was nowhere near the red bus shown in closing of beijing.
So many performers that the ground was just crowded.
Did we want to project over populated India so that some westerners take away some of Indians?
Just sit down and think. Do we want cheap entertainment at any cost?
Total disappointment!!!

Please suggest your script for such an event
by Subhajit Bhattacharyya on Oct 05, 2010 02:28 PM

Dear Ma'am,
First, pl. get your facts right ( you are lacking in this even!).
Second, Pl. suggest to us a script what it should have been, so we know your creative ideas.
Third, Pl. suggest an execution plan of such script.

All of this should be in this forum only as you are commenting on the already organised programme here.

CWG
by perviz bhote on Oct 05, 2010 02:18 PM  | Hide replies

The Opening Ceremony of the CWG gave a botox injection to our sagging morale after all the bad publicity we got, especially from the TV and Print media who thought they were doing a great job of 'washing the Indian family's dirty linen in public'. The press needs to reign in their 'patriotic guns' someetimes. If they did want to draw the attention of the administration to the gaping flaws they could have filmed it and gone to Shiela Dixit and Kalmadi's offices and threatened that if the faults that have been filmed were not attended to, then they would go public with it. Instead, it was a 'sound byte race' with each channel trying to outdo the other.
The opening night showcased middle-class India and its ancient culture, but it also showcased our technological superiority that was used brilliantly.
India has arrrived, despite the toilets that were left dirty after the workmen had left. For this, the supervisors and contractors need to hang their heads in shame - Not Kalmadi or Shiela Dixit.
However, they will also have to account for the 'filling of the deep pockets' of those in charge of the event.

Right said perviz...
n the other morning i saw star news targeting kalmadi (again) over his incorrectly naming abdul kalam and moreover showing an insect flying around on his face.. n it was flashing "makhi se hue pareshaan kalmadi" instead of showing how great was the opening ceremony...hats off to every artist and the management people...n thumbs down to such channels..

Yeh, this is qitea negative ariticle. After what have happened with CWG, the opening ceremony which was delivered was not expected. We may not be at par with China but after SO MUCH CHAOS we managed something sort of OK standard. That is appreciable. But yes after CWG is over we can try to do wat china does. Shoot them out. Does anybody agree now?? Will anybody compare with China now??
I agree that even to bottom of the workforce who is responsible should be punished. But there is something called as Supervisor or Manager. y r there for. if they they should den wat bout the manager's manager.. if they should den wat bout the Manager of all.. y not he/she should not be punished.. here he/she is Kalmadi/Shela Dixit. If they cant look after dere subordinates den y the hell they r there for??????????

You r failed to find any positives here, mam
by Ramesh Routray on Oct 05, 2010 12:53 PM  | Hide replies

I really feel pity on u. U r among those persons who always try to find faults whatever u see and wherever u go or I may say u r a kind of person who may appreciate the foreign products terminating the own desi products even if desi are far better in that context. I can agree to some point of urs like India didn't showcase its future here which wud be better. But the way u presented the article here looks like as if somebody appointed you to find the faults only.
I don't agree widout baloon, d show wud have been flopped. The mehendi act of School Children, The Drums, The Sankha Dhwani, The Dances, The Sand Animation by World Famous Sudarshan Patnayak all were praise worthy. Of course The Baloon was a vital part of the show. Everywhere there is fault and shortcoming, but d way u looked at it is not all appreciable.

can't make up our minds, can we?
by Muktiprasad Banerjee on Oct 05, 2010 12:44 PM  | Hide replies

For the first time in 25 odd years I saw a show that was unapologetic.
Why care so much about what the world thinks? Our style of life might be a work in progress, imperfect etc, but it is what it is! And I will change it if I should or if I want to; not because some ex colonist who lives differently might think unfavorably about my existence, and has the temerity to indicate that unless I conformed, I won't be accepted into his club.
Colonial elitism, Bang Bang!!
What's wrong with the chaos? The performers seemed to enjoy themselves..better than being lauded and applauded in thankless anonymity.
The Dresswallas, the dabbawallahs, the drains and the security checks have become a a part of our lives. They may or may not be the perfect ways to live, but they are how we live! And I felt that our lives were celebrated at the event.
The last thousand years of our past has been a story of the old subcontinental way of life being undermined and our cultural and socio- enonomic evolution repeatedly derailed by central Asian barbarians and viral European
colonists.
But we adapted, we survived.
And 60 odd politically free years after centuries of slavery, here we are, still trying to find our ground.
The CWG problems are reflective of a young, economically subdued nation, trying to tell the world we have arrived. Not necessary!
How we 'perform' in a social paradigm that's not ours is not important.
What's important is that we're here, we are proud, and we'll survive. Jai Ho!

Can anyone tell what Rs.70000 crores (of tax payer's money- my heart bleeds because I pay taxes, unlike the politicians and most contractors), spent on CWG have achived? I am not sure if filling the pockets of the organizers and their contactors can be counted as an achivement. Sorry for making a negative comment but it is what has happened.
If India is to organize such extravaganzas, let it be through private organizations, raising money from various interested sources and not spend public money. It is easy to threaten the roadside dwellers to clear the roadsides, but it is difficult to improve the economy enough to make their lot beeter, so that they do not have to sleep on roadsides under polythene sheets.
So long as India doesn't have the capability of providing essentials to it's citizens, it is a shame to spend so much public money on such ephemeral extravaganzas.
JMHO.

One of my colleagues who is from Pakistan said that 'u Indians throw 4 lakhs people from delhi to show case this extrvagenza '..This Sheela Bhutt belongs to those fault finders... I really feel pity for Rediff which was turning Anti-Hindu and now turning Anti-National..

The best way is to organise a debate at India gate lawns with general public as participants alongwith Kalmadi & company, Congress, Opposition , IOC, P...M & Finace minister, Delhi Chief minister and other organisors.

Let every body wash linen in open.

I would say with proper figures.
Let all be part of it.
Some deserve appreciation.
Some deserve criticism.
Some deserve to be told that the direction in which they are taking the nation is no where but to the dogs.

Sheela is always wrong
by Sachin Purohit on Oct 05, 2010 12:27 PM  | Hide replies

This lady is always wrong no matter whether she writes pro-establishment or anti. This one turns out to be anti, quite unusual about Sheela Bhatt. But again, she is wrong. The event was very well organised and depicted a taste of Indian hospitality. Be it any part of the nation, how poor or how rich the people there, we never fail to show warmth to our guests. The message was very effectively choreographed. The best one I liked was the children painting Mehendi-coloured Namaskaram on the white cloth.

I must still say that no marks to Suresh Kalmadi and company for this. If at all we have been able to put up this show, it is thanks the last moment entry of our army, who filled all the glaring gaps in security, hygiene and infrastructure.

Sheela Bhatt are the kind of journalists that try to claim they are journalists but in reality they are fit to be low skilled clerks. When CHINA portrayed their history in the Olympic games the same lady claimed it to be beautiful and when india actually did a good job of handling the opening ceremony she is claiming it to be chaotic but warm. Dear SHEELA BHATT find another job you are not fit to be a journalist.
