Bailey Bridges are elementary stuff for Army
by george thomas on Oct 05, 2010 04:31 PM  | Hide replies

Bailey Bridges are elementary stuff for Army.

We got to Dhaka by by-passing main roads and using Bailey Bridges across many rivers.

When we pulled out of Bangladesh, we left the Bailey Bridges in place and donated those bridges to the people of Bangladesh.

Bailey Bridges can be constructed very fast because they use steel form-work. The surface is 'ek-dum' solid wood. Tanks can roll on them, that's one possible use during war.

This particular bridge took a little longer because it was a "civilian" bridge and had to be painted and decorated.

Sheila Dikshit said on NDTV that the bridge which collapsed was designed by a British team ..... and definitely she is going to investigate after the CWG whether the design was faulty --or-- the construction people made an error.

In all fairness, Suresh Kalmadi had no hand in the bridge collapse. It was not completed and not yet handed over to the CWG OC. ... Sheila Dikshit made it clear that the bridge was under construction under the supervision of the Delhi PWD.

Let the buck stop here ... !

a marriage succeeds when husband, wife and others are sincere and want it to succeed.

a nation suceeds when citizens, institutions and politicians work towards it. but the politician is content with his own success. there are ample of examples from the history: local, international and in every age.

The Indian Army has shown to the world what it is capable of. While it is a shame on the OC definitely the Indian Army saved the skin of these not so ashamed OC and the Delhi CM and other politicians.Hats oof to the Army and its personnel for doing a wonderful job.

Let Manmohan Singh hand over the reigns of the country to the Army for 5 years and see the difference. I am sure, the Army would perform at its best and achieve what the politicians have not achieved since the last 60 years of independence.

well there are good and bad people everywhere.
if you think there is no corruption in army than you must be dreaming. you have to analyse this commonwealth games there was a delay in awarding contracts, they wanted the right price for themselves.
now in army also the same things happen there are delays in procurement of weapons and equipments.
yes army saved the day here, that's what matters.
so cwg the contractor , the subcontractor and the sub sub contractor all need to make money and to get the contracts they need to pay the money so can not blame anyone.
this was once in a lifetime oppurtunity for sheila dixit how could she not make money . for army we have a huge budget they take their share on a ongoing basis ...
understand

Oh! How i love people who act like experts when they know nothing about the topic. Agreed that the Army is not devoid of corruption, but its amazingly low when compared to the civil services. Besides that, the delays in procurements are primarily due to the defence ministry babus and politicians who are forever on the lookout for "better deals".

Just because of a few incidents WE SHOULD NOT PRONOUNCE that the whole army is corrupt. Most of even Indian people don't know about Indian Army how superior it is. The person who writes even on discussion board should understand fully and then should comment on this discussion board. Otherwise, that fellow is expoiting self ignorance to outside world. Let us pity for them and educate them.

With due respect to you and the Army, the article is in bad faith.Media and evryone else has just about said everything negative about CWG.Let not the Army join, I AM BETTER THAN THOU BRIGADE. CWG organisers have proven EVERYONE wrong.Just as ONE SWLAAOW DOESNOT A SUMMER MAKE.ONE FALLEN BRIDGE DOESNOT MAKE THE ORGANISERS KS TO LEARN ALPHABETS.

Unfair comparison
by Ajit Kulkarni on Oct 05, 2010 03:49 PM

While I dont mean to undermine the Army's effort and singlemindedness towards the objective which was thrust on them due to some 'goof up' of some civilian construction company and some shoddy management by the organizers, it is pertinent to note that only an organization like the army is capable of taking decisions in contingency situations because no one else can match the kind of empowerment that is available with the army folds. There aren't a hundred approvals required and mobilization is possible on a snap. Funds once allocated are released to the CO who then just goes about the execution. The sappers are good engineers but civilians are not all shoddy.
All said, the Army restored national pride in this very awkward situation and as an Indian, my heartfelt thanks go out to each one that contributed.

But why Indian Army always asked to do civilian jobs. Specially, we know this is eywash to prevent construction company and PWD and other Govt Servents who did all mess will be set scot free. Because everything is restored by Army. This has helped the corrupt people who eat money and did nothing.
