It's the clay, stupid!
by chirajeet sengupta on May 21, 2010 03:59 PM

It's not a curse or a jinx...the F-Open is the only Grand Slam that is played on clay courts, which requires a drastically different style of approach. So players who win slams on different surfaces would have to be really greats. Just look at A) how many players who have won Wimbledon (grass courts- diametrically opposite to clay)have also won the French and B) how many true greats have all won all the other slams but never won the French. If you look at these stats the answer becomes obvious. Curse, jinx - my ruddy left foot! Who are these sports journalists - they have no frigging clue about their subject!

The analysis includes winners from 1990 onwards.Chang made it to one more French open final and a US open final both of which he lost. The man they forgot to mention is Thomas Muster who beat Chang in the final in the mid-nineties. It was his only grand slam.

Not exactly "only grand slam". Muster was twice a victor at the French Open.
