Prakash padukone was easily one of the greatest legends Indian sport has produced. He single handedly put India on the world badminton map. And all this with a gentleman's code of conduct. He was indian badminton's face in the late 70's and entire 80's.I still remember a bill board contest winning entry when he defeated his close rival and good friend, Morten Frost. The winning bill board outside Mumbai's Charni Road station said " Go back to the freezer Frost".Reminded of old school days when I saw the great ones photo.
He was then a super player and now a super Dad. Who can forget his great match against the Legendary Indonesian Lim Swi King in which he did not allow his great opponent to score even a single point in a game!?.(Highly unbelievable ) Many of the Indonesian papers the next day wrote that Prakash used Indian Magic to mesmerise LSK. He was the one who made us proud as Indians on that day!!
He is one of the greatest sporting icons India has produced. He is a real champ - for at least generation of Indians he was an ideal - so high that most did not even dream of achieving it. None has achieved it in Badminton yet. I agree with other bloggers that he is in the same league as Anand, and PT Usha and Dhyanchand. They are even better than Sachin, Gavaskar and Kapil for the simple reason that their sports did not have facilities, support or popularity in India. Yet they achieved and fired up the imagination of many generations. Hats off to their talent and more so for dedication!!
