When Tennis can be played on three types of courts (grass, clay etc) then why not hockey?
India should have its own hockey cup which will be played on normal ground (No turf)

hockey and India

Still many think that India can outplay the Europeans. We can not do anything in football the same can be applied to hockey also because, in olden days the hockey was an artistic game. The grass surface helped for dribbling and short passes. Now its just like WWF fight. Big hittings and no off side rules etc makes the game dull. In addition umpire referral system has affected the free flow of game. We are in 8th place because only 20 countries play serious game. In football we are in 140 the place because nearly 150 countries play that game. So in all sport we are just 10 or 20 rungs ahead from the last. Ths same cab be applied to cricket also.

What a Sports Minister and What a IHF President
by Rajspeaks on Mar 12, 2010 11:19 PM  | Hide replies

Both Gills-- Ms Gill and KPS GILL should be sacked. They are the reason behind pathetic condition of our national Game.

A board like BCCI should be appointed for Hockey. The board should only contain EX hockey players. No politicians should be selected.
The whole process should start from SCRAP
1. Proper salary / Contracts for Players.
2. A new Coach-Indian should step in.He should be given atleast a time of 2 years
3. Coporate world willing to sponsor Hockey should step in.
4. Team should not attend any tournament for an Year
5. Let the team be ready first then they can be sent for matches.

HOCKEY BACHAOO..

along with the 2 gill's the other person that should be shown the door is *kalmadi* these 3 characters should say miles away from any new hockey set up and a court order be issued accordingly as that is the only way they cn stop poking their noses in the middle. secondly, the current coach is doing fine, why change it? is it necessary to have a indian coach? the criteria is to have a good coach..that's it and it does not matter who that coach is or whether he is a indian or a foreigner? last but not least privte sponsors should take over to get rid of these bureaucrats that have ruined our national games but filled their pockets with looted money..? what a shame it is..and this shameless government is just sitting and watching which is another shame..!!

Hockey WC debacle of India
by Nisar Ansari on Mar 12, 2010 11:11 PM  | Hide replies

Unable to match India's ballcontrol, stickwork and penetration into the 'D' for over 70 yrs, the Western countries drastically changed the rules of the game and the playing surface to sound the death-knell of Indian hockey.Today, there is no foul at all except if you slap the umpire!India,Pakistan and other Asian nations nations must fight IHF to re-introduce rules of 'Offside,Wrong-side,Obstruction,Dangerous Play and Hitting Goal wooden board to score a goal'. The hockey played today is a mockery of the Game!

well said Nisar...today hockey has become a dangerous game to play because of europeans...almost shots are played like golf..the defenders are wearing mask during penalty corners due to deadly drag flicks..only India and Pakistan play it like an artistic game...europeans are just using the pace and power to outplay us..we can forget about winning olympic or worlcup unless the rules are reset to 70's

An improvement in ranking
by Nayan Kumar on Mar 12, 2010 10:56 PM  | Hide replies

Congratulations to Indian Team for finishing 8th as compared to 11th in last world cup.
But, I couldn't appreciate the performance of India. India won only 1 match and 1 draw in 6 matches. India has many star players, like deepak, Prabhjot, tushar, sandeep, Rajpal etc, but all these players underperformed miserably. All these were not sticking to the basics of Hockey as Australians, Germans, English, Netherlands and Spanish did. I really enjoyed the Games of Australia, Germany, England, Netherland much more than India's games. I am not sad for India could not win matches but I am sad for India's poor performance and repeating same mistakes again and again. There was no improvement from game 1 to last game and I think experts will agree with me. I hope Indian Hockey and system will improve in future.

I won a bet! Hurrah!
by Ramakrishnan Iyer on Mar 12, 2010 10:14 PM  | Hide replies

I had earlier placed a bet before our match against Australia that India would finish 8th or worse in this world cup. See my comment at the article 'India hope to maintain winning momentum against Australia' here at rediff itself. And the Indian hockey team didn't disappoint me at all! Congratulations India, and thanks as well. In my previous comment, I had even predicted that India would possibly be playing against Argentina for this position. I am proud of the Indian hockey team! Keep it up!
