Hockey - All 12 countries participated are very tough teams. Anyone could beat anyone on a given day.

Apart from these 12, there are some very tough hockey teams like Russia, Poland, Malaysia, Belgium, France, China, Japan, Ukraine, Scotland are very strong contenders for a place in World Cup and Olympics.

Overall, Field hockey is played in around 70 countries, out of which around 30 countries play very seriously and fight each other to find the top 12 positions.

Coming to cricket:
------------------

There are 8 teams - India, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand and England. Some other countries like Zimbabwe, Kenya pick their people playing in English League. Bangladesh is another country which is meant to lose matches and players of other countries improve their personal records.

In the last 2 decades cricket is shrinking to Indian subcontinent. Cricket is more entertainment than sports in these countries due to commercial interest of consumer companies who sell their products through cricketers and cricket matches.

AS FAR AS CRICKET IS CONCERN you just don’t compare with Hockey or Soccer, as of now Europeans are not showing decent interest in cricket coz their environment is not cricket supportive rest all are fine, beside this 50 countries are affiliated with ICC & their regional boards are learning cricket the day is not far away, say after 5 years, cricket will reach at par with soccer & more would be lucrative & highly glamorous thanks to IPL

I do not think so.

Cricket is almost a non event in countries like NZ, Zimbabwe etc. You can see only a few hundred people watching ODI and T20 matches sitting on grass. In countries like West Indies, Pakistan cricket is on serious decline. Bangladesh is only to lose matches.

Effectively cricket is primarily played in India, Australia and SA. Overall, cricket events are shrinking to India only because of 80% money in International cricket comes from India, a country that does not money to spend on sports.

Cricket VS Hocky
by Veer on Mar 10, 2010 12:44 PM  | Hide replies

Rise of Cricket cant be blamed for the downfal of Hockey. People can be encouraged to watch Hockey only if it starts winning. Then only there will be sponsers for hockey and the game will prosperous. For eg, I thought of watching India's each and every match in this WC. Once they beat Pak, I was eagerly waiting for their next game. But, the way we lost all the other matches, I stopped even following the WC. Its the same with Cricket. Once we start loosing, the interest does die down.

exactly.....only when india wins we feel like watching the game.

there is no bias attitude towards cricket, when india was out of the world cup in 2007 i dint watch the world cup.

hockey is a very entertaining game, if india starts winning we will surely watch it.

I watched almost all games starting from 8:35pm on weekdays, irrespective of who is playing. I was amazed to see how attractive hockey has become on Astro turf. Even Europeans are playing with mix of short passes and the moves were spectacular.

What if India could not succeed, but hockey succeded. I enjoyed watching matches more than cricket matches. There are 2 basis reasons:

1. Hockey matches get completed in 90 minutes flat.
2. You watch this spectacular game on Green surface No stop for 35 minutes, absolutely commercial free.

The TV Referral, although some decisions went against India, is a very good start and makes the game attractive.

What is this comparison between hockey and cricket
by venkatapaty swami on Mar 10, 2010 12:39 PM  | Hide replies

Comparing cricket and hockey and taking a high moral position is one of the most lopsided arguments...Cricket first of all is the most popular game in teh country...and it doesn;t depend on the government handouts.... Does a Micheal Phelps ask the US government to treat him on the same footing as American Baseball and Football players wh earn hundreds of millions of Dollars??? He is just happy swimming and feel proud about it.... Hockey players should first play hockey for the love of it rather than playing it for with the hope of becoming clerks and railways ticket collectors and if they progress to the Indian team...then demand that htey be treated on par with cricketers....There are so many cry babies who support our hockey cry babies...boss first show us the results and everything will follow..

Do you mean to say that our National Hockey players are bonded laborers and should play only and don't ask about their salary?

My friend, they had to go on strike because the Govt had not paid their salary for months, and Hockey India full of IAS officers was in no mood to pay their salary in near future crying lack of money.

A hockey player gets Rs 5000/- per match, a cricket player gets Rs 2 lakhs-4 lakhs to play a bi-latersl ODI.

Do you know that our cricket players are bigger DUDs in competitive cricket. They lose to minnows like Bangladesh and crash out in first round. Their performance in Major tournaments is pathetic.

i need to ask a question why the game like hockey did not have the supremacy over the other sports is it because of the money or the uninterested officials of hockey federation in india

Its administrators first.

Its administrators job to arrange sponsors for the team. Its administrators job is to spread the game and motivate talents to play hockey.

Money is of course is reason. If you pay Rs 5,000 to hockey players and Rs 2 lakh to cricket players, the sport talent of the country will obviously choose cricket.

If in administration u have idiot like KPS Gill (IPS officer with no knoledge of hockey- Good in drink & molesting women), how can hockey progress. Other than cricket(which is run by private BCCI & hence effiecient), most of sports organization(including hockey) are govt based & controlled by few corrupt IAS oficials who are good for nothing. In north if u are IAS(even if u are an idiot ), u can take law in ur hand & spoil any sport u want.

Institutionalise hockey
by alex gemofaboy on Mar 10, 2010 12:18 PM  | Hide replies

Does anything that is deemed national ever change? How many Olympic golds has cricket brought to the country? People who denounce hockey and espouse cricket should take a look at the remuneration the hockey players get Rs. 5000-10000 for Olympic/World Cup matches. The players who play do so for the love of the game. One may support cricket but please do not denounce hockey.

Alex,
It si not right to denounce Hockey as a sport, but it is time to remove that as a national sport of India. The problems of the game is not with its players, but more so with the administration and the government. How log can the public pay for the game to be pampered when no results are coming out of it. Look at Cricket, there is no government involvement or funding, but the game is managed and marketed so well. So it time that BCCI takes over the Hockey board and starts managing the game in India. That way we can hope that better quality hockey will be played in a few years time and we may be able to regain our statyurs in the world of hockey.

Another point, you are speaking about Cricket winning Olympic Gold. Hasn't India won the World Cup twice. This is equivalent to the Olympics. Mind you, Cricket does not figure in the Olympics.

Then Kabbadi should be prferred over cricket. We have won more world cups than cricket and we have asian games gold medals to show additionally.

Yes Kabbadi is also an interesting game. Have you played it?? Again it could have got more following if only our government did not control it. All these federations are run by self styled sport loving piliticians. That is where the proble is.

Dear Mohan,
How can anything that is deemed national be changed?
Hockey players also have a playing life like cricket players and they need to be paid well, so that youth of the country can take up the game in large nos.

Mind you, if BCCI were to take up hockey as well and other suffering sports also there wouldn't be much left for cricket, would it?

Denounce hockey as a national sport.
by Sandeep Modak on Mar 10, 2010 12:09 PM

Denounce hockey as a national sport, as the players and relevant officials have brought it an utter shame. Instead declare cricket as a national sport, where India as a country and team is respected and feared.

Hockey is dead in India long time back!!
by mohan br on Mar 10, 2010 12:05 PM  | Hide replies

There are few realities one must note when speaking about Hockey as a sport.
1. It is cricket which is the national sport in India. There are no second thoughts about this. Anybody having doubts must be still living in the past.
2. Hockey died as a sport about 20 years back.
3. Indian Hockey federation and Indian Government must be blamed for this.
4. IHF - for its foolish handling of the sport
5. Indian Government - for trying to still have a hold on the sport.
Let us not waste space and time in the media speaking about this unfortunately dead sport!!

That is why you hve to think why this treatment to hockey players. The game has been spoiled by adminsitrators. Average players are making the grade, Good palyers do not get encouraged.
Cricket drives the passsion, but hockey does not do it any longer.
