Renumeration for Indian Hockey players
by S Shrikanth on Mar 06, 2010 08:30 AM  | Hide replies

The newspaper HT, New Delhi edition has exposed the renumeration system for Indian National hockey players that was upgraded a month before the World Cup.

1. For playing in World Cup and Olympics - Rs 10,000/match.
2. For playing International match - Rs 5000/match.

If a hockey player plays average 50 International matches (including Olympics, WC, Champions trophy) a year, he would maximum earn Rs 3-3.5 lakhs/year for playing for Indian National hockey team.

Contrary to this Spanish captain Pablo Amat earns $16m (Rs 75 Crore)/year from hockey. Hockey players in Germany, Australia and Holland earn between $2m-$14m from playing hockey.

Atleast Indian hockey team should prove their best in the current world cup to get the glory back. The hockey players are clueless in front of the european team and fails to convert penalties in to goal. They don't have a star player like Dhanraj in the team.I don't think deepak will be in the team after this world cuo.

Time to revive PHL... if PHL help india in building up new players... then it shud be started and all the so called hockey federation shud be banned and make an independent pvt body for hockey like cricket.. we may curse BCCI but cricket has grown by BCCI strategies which cant be ignored

Yes. Even when India were P;ympic champions and World Champions in Hockey, and in Cricket India was a big loser everywhere, Cricket was more popular among people in India.

As I heard from my father, It has always been a game of rich and elite and then also most of the magazines and periodicals used to give wide coverage to cricket as they were owned by rich and elite people of India.

Today also, cricket is a game of rich and elite(a cricketer earns Rs 2 lakh/match commercial endorsements), a national hockey player earns Rs 5000/match). So, which game the talents would chose? The choice is obvious.

It will take 6 months-1 year from now as many of the team members are new to International arena, actually playing an international match for the first time.

Hockey India must ensure that:

1. Coach Jose Brasa must remain for long term (next 4 years).
2. Players are adequately paid (Rs 5000 per match is only peanut and young generation will never be attracted with this much money). Hockey India should know how to arrange more sponsors and money.
3. No more politics in Hockey India, it hurts the morale of the team.

Yes Mr Satish, I am big hockey fan because:

1. The game finishes in 90 minutes flat.
2. The game is very fast paced. Its nearly impossible to leave the seat.
3. You can view whole thirty five seconds of each half absolutely NO commercial break.

Yesterday's Germany-Argentina match was a real thriller.

There is no chance that India will enter semi-finals in this world cup. Its near impossible that they will be able to beat England which is on top of their form.

All India should concentrate on 5th position, for that they must put their energy on today's match.

there is a mathematical possibility. But realistically, India has as much chance of going to semis, as India have a chance of winning the Davis Cup tie against Russia...lol

Hockey has not lost its charm. Probably you are not watching hockey matches. All matches are very exciting and its difficult to leave the TV for 35 minutes. Most importantly a game is over in 90 minutes.

Can you get 35 minutes of uninterrupted excitement in cricket?

Even if India loses the next 2 games, it will finish 4th or 5th, and will play for the 7-10 positions. This is great achievement since they finished 11th in the last WC. A big cheer to Brasa and the boys!!

No, if they lose both matches, they will finish 5th and play for 9-12 positions.

If they win both, or draw against England and win against SA,then they will play for position 5-8.

I think you guys are not aware of the rule change for this world cup. There wont be any cross playing for positions. So for 5-6 place Group A's 3rd place team will play Group B's 3rd place team. For 7-8 place, Group A's 4th place team will play Group B's 4th place team. For 9-10 place, Group A's 5th place team will play Group B's 5th place team.

So if India places 4th or 5th in Group B, they will play for 7-8 place ot 9-10 place.

Thanks a lot. Yes, India has larger chances to finish 4th (and play for 7-8 places) as first 3 places will definitely go to Australia, England and Spain.

But who knows, there could be some surprises in store (like England beat mighty Australians earlier and Pak defeated Spain)

Brasa is doing excellent job, we need many more Brasas to be sent to our schools to teach our boys the modern hockey and groom them to play for India. That will be real transformation of our National game.

Yes, Brasa must stay till next World cup. Is spite of defeats against Australia(No.2) and Spain(No. 3), this young and inexperienced team is shaping well with long passes as well. The two goals against Australia were really well executed.

A finish among Top 6 would be great for 12th ranked India.

go home guys....no one is blaming u....indians are not cut out for it....we love to chat, discuss, argue, beat our chest with pride and prejudice!!! with great difficulty, indian cricket team is struggling to maintain its no.1 ranking while almost losing it!!! we can understand the pain of the indian sportsmen!!! we we were smarter and realised it long long back and never made any sports as our profession!!! it is better late than never to come out smarter!!! atleast being gud chatterboxes, please get into commentary and make some moolah than trying to compete in global sports!!!! and please take this as a lesson and dont misguuide ur children in making them believe they can achieve anything by having sheer determination and hard work!!!!! please clearly point it out to them that we are not genetically built that way!!! cut off all international sports channels in ur TV so that the children dont get carried away unless u r commenting in that match!!! give them loads of books to improve india's literacy and teach them this: "PARTICIPATION IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WINNING" but also be clear to them "DONT EVEN PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL SPORTS" if they wish to retain their self-respect!!!

some sensible words !!!! you told the truth and reality, i 100% agree with you. We(Indians) usually don't want to learn good things from others and instead are very proud on the past glory. Just look at the neighbour China who is having similar population, but they learnt from others, put efforts to build necessary infrastructure throughout the country to develope the sport and thats why they are getting so many medals in any international sports events be in Olympics or Asian Games. We need to learn those things from them. Will we?
