I do not understand how the people of India expect a bunch of clowns to win the Hockey WC..they looked extremely naive compared to Spaniards...basically these so-called players were embroiled in some disputes with officials for past 2 months...so the result is evident...they had to place advertisements in TV to invite people to watch these clowns...someone called Hockey the National Sport of India.. I am not being critical but extremely sad the way we played....

Don't watch. Nobody invited you, especially when former players were were unwelcomed. Thats the treatment to hockey, u get it? Who bothers? Nobody has any shame. Read what S Shrikanth is saying. There r lot of other things apart from this, worth knowing before criticizing players.

Pakistan and India will keep on losing to Europeans until they stop being so obsessive with adopting European style of play, which they are so not good at it. Pakistan hockey team was a force to beat till 1996 but we too pressed the panic button like Indians did in 1980s when they switched over from Asian style to European one, finding themselves hanging in the air for next two decades to come . Before 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Pakistan would easily make it to semis final of World Cup and Olympics at ease, however, once Spain pushed them out of that world-top-fours’ queue by qualifying for semis there , we started panicking and became confused by trying to adopt European style of play. The only way to tackle the robotic Europeans is to play attacking hockey right from the start. We can’t defend for too long. Even in today’s game against England, whenever Pakistan played aggressively, they found Englishmen fumbling in the D-line but for no reason they became defensive and that resulted in a conceding three soft goals at a time when it was all 2-2. I hope that Pakistan and India hockey confused officialdom would listen to me!

Perfect analysis Zulfi-bhai! First there was India, India and India. Then for a long period, there were Australia, Germany, Netherlands and Pakistan, with India and England threatening time and again to upset this almost sure semi-final set up. Today, both teams are never sure when they take the field as to whether they will lose to Spain, Argentina or even South Africa. In both countries, the officials make more news than the players. But even today the style of hockey that is worth watching is still the sub-continental one. Witness the superb goals scored day before yesterday by Vikram Pillai and Arjun Halappa by India against Australia

In fact both India and Pakistan today are confident of beating only one side....each other! Probably because the style of play is almost identical

I fully agree with Mr Gul.
Even in 80s, India and Pak were always among top 6 teams in the world. 1986 world cup saw both teams playing for the last 2 places. What a shame! The story started from here and still goes on.
Pakistan has better record than my country in Hockey as they still won tournaments at world level in 80s and 90s. But the problem became severe in this millennium as both countries lost this game at grassroot level.
How many Indian and Paksitani players play in Dutch or German leagues? None. Because hockey adminsitrators in both country do not allow their players and suddenly they play against mighty europeans in the world cup.

Same problems in dealing with european teams have occured time and again. Our team is weak when compared to australia, Spain, Holland and Germany. It is only with repeated exposure and matches with them for 2-3 years that we can match them. Otherwise we will play them only in World cup/olympics (provided we qualify) and they will beat them. But the silver shining in this world cup is that hopefully sponsors and Tv channels will look at the potential and maybe PHL, hockey IPL will start and infuse some money into it. Money is needed into academies and organising tournaments. and yes, our asian style is still good. Australia still play with mix-Asian Style hockey. We are not suited to Total Hockey concept. It is just like Italy cannot play Brazil style football and Brazil cannot play Germany style football. We should concentrate on asian style hockey.

hi guys, this is some positive constructive criticizm,we should stick to our strengts but partly adapt the gora way, like Brazil, meaning we need to be more physically stong, either that, or we need out of this world class players like pakistan had, mentioning the great Mr. Shabaz ahmed, I saw the 94 world cup, and it was him who was responsible for bringing paki the glory, i still remember teh 80 yard dash he made against australia , in the semi-final and then tore his hamstring, but made sure kamran scored the goal.
serioursly what happed to such world class skill- that tapping ability with the ball is rarely seen- we need to go down to our fundamental building blocks, primary and secondary schools.
What one can expect from a team , whose players went on strike weeks before, the tournament. Instead of focusing on future, they were busy in begging in front of media for there previous pays. Well someone should tell these morons, that if u play well, then u get pay, no one wants to support a losing side. Hopefully, The Great Indian Hockey Team players would learn to play as a whole unit, instead of individuals luking for fame...

No you are wrong. They were asking for their salaries that was not paid for months.
Are indian hockey players bonded laborers that they play for the country without salary?
We will have to support this losing side. Because its our team and we have to win tomorrow, if not today.
if money was the issue indian cricket would always be like it was in 1999,the truth is when u get rewarded just after beating a pakistan team it is inspiring enough atleast 2 try..today india lost 6 chances in last 19 minutes and could not score a goal, don't blame it on politics or facilities or anyting..even cricketers in the state level face the same issues
Re: money ain't the issue

But Indian cricket team loses to much weaker teams like Bangaldesh and Srilanka in World cup.
India Cricket team is good in playing bi-lateral series at home hiighly manipulated by Sponsors to suit their interests.
In competive cricket (major tournaments) Indian Cricket team is a Big DUDD. In the last 7 years they have not crossed first round of any major tournament featuring more than 3 teams.
Hockey is a selfless game ! its magical and India was the best during the beginning of hockey era because of the players who were amazing with their talent, character and mental toughness.
I was an ardent admirer of hockey and cricket equally....like every indian.I remember the asia cups and olympics and aslan shah hockey tournament when we count days and thrillingly wait and watch the hockey matches of india.
But somewhere the india lost its shade and kept on a losing streak.Sometimes played so lazily and lost character for some time.people blamed modern hockey for that ..but i felt the indian players lacked the old lustre of selfless and natural hockey without feeling any return and awards..Slowly we couldnt feel with the hockey team since much selfishness and continuous loss of matches made it less prone to general publicity.
Recently there was a war from players asking for money.Considering the situation it may be good for them...But they should feel the heart of indian hockey and not stomachs when they play......hope good management and good hockey players emerge to take india back to supreme.

when cricket becomes international, dont be surprised to see India's position erode to the bottom of the list

countries like spain and germany will neva have the brain or patience to last in a 5 day great game of cricket,so there is no chance of that
it's a shame, but to think that this is our national sport and that we are where we are today from our glorious past is a shame. We all know that we have a bunch of really really poor administrators and that needs to change - Gill - he's the biggest jerk - i think sporting associations need to be come more professional and hire professionals - even from the corporate if they have to and then look to bring change... Sachin and Swhwag can support, but the players need to play!!! better luck in future!!
if lack of support is everything how can pakistan be 4 time world champs and no-7 team (we are no-12) in the world?plz guys now don't start whining and compare with cricket, atleast cricketers are in top-3 always...do not forget india were the 4th poorest cricketing board 10 years ago....they are on top bcz they played well and did not whine around

who cares about odis before tests?I am sure u don't follow cricket and have never played the sport at a good level or u wud not have considered odis as THE BENCHMARK
Don't blame the players but the system they follow & get 2 the root cause , dirty politics ....Profession Schools need to be set up & sports to be given equal importance as education & paying well . A billion plus can do much better .... Sadly we have the best brains to to plan the whole WEST but not our systems to achieve the the world best ....

The thing is its easy for you people to blame everything on the government... Never blame the players na...
What do you want man, should our politicians go and teach hockey to them...
What our players want. Sponsor-They have sahara... Facilities- for hockey we have good facilities...
The real thing is the players are at fault here...Think of cuba for a minute...They have such a bad economy, yet they won 22 meals in olympics, what facilities could cuba had provided them. The players are at fault here, not the government...
