look at positives
by vipul saxena on Mar 05, 2010 05:45 AM

Same problems in dealing with european teams have occured time and again. Our team is weak when compared to australia, Spain, Holland and Germany. It is only with repeated exposure and matches with them for 2-3 years that we can match them. Otherwise we will play them only in World cup/olympics (provided we qualify) and they will beat us. But the silver shining in this world cup is that hopefully sponsors and Tv channels will look at the potential and maybe PHL, hockey IPL will start and infuse some money into it. Money is needed into academies and organising tournaments.

Sorry state of sports in India...
by Chicago Male on Mar 05, 2010 05:45 AM

We (Indians) are quick to criticize our teams on poor performance instead of diagnosing what's going wrong. To me performance of a nation's team in any particular sport is directly tied to how much money goes into that particular sport.
When your nation's hockey team had to warn you of strike/walk out on issues of pay you should know what to except from hockey world cup. Players are not to be blamed for this but our system.
Playing in world cup hockey requires sufficient money going into hockey to support players, coaches, facilities (Astroturf). This support has to me over a prolonged period of time not a couple of months before a tournament. To do all this it requires BIG money which hockey does not command in India.
This also is true for our (India's) poor performance in Olympics. As someone rightly pointed out in this forum on how China has been able to perform better in major events by properly supporting their athletes. I think China even beat us at hockey recently 1-0 in either Asian or Olympic games.
This however does not explain why we (India) haven't won the Cricket world cup in 27 years and how Australia has dominated cricket for last 3 world cups. I guess the only consolation is that we don’t suck as much in Cricket.
I wish there was a good way to fund sports in India without involving corrupt sports officials, government etc.

Why WE fail
by Jai on Mar 05, 2010 04:09 AM  | Hide replies

I have read almost all the comments and yes, most of them are quite genuine. I would like to summarize primary reasons of this failure.

1. Faulty & unorganized System (Indian Hockey Fed) governed by corrupt people.
2. Lack of world class infrastructure, training and incentives.
3. Too much focus on "beating Pakistan" ONLY. Though it is important to beat Pakistan but that's not the only objective.
4. Genetics - well this can be overcome if facilities and infrastructure are adequate.
5. No cash incentive should be promised just by virtue of winning one game (this time after beating Pakistan).
6. Too much focus on cricket is also a reason though I am not against cricket as a sport. But there is a HUGE diversity.
7. WE have to learn from mistakes (which WE do not)
8. and finally MUST have a feeling of Patriotism when representing the country.

All is not lost and there is always an opportunity to improve....but When???

Champions win consistently
by Yash Bhatnagar on Mar 05, 2010 03:37 AM  | Hide replies

India focusses too much on beating Pakistan and forgets the big picture. This mentality is cheap and lacks any kind of vision to develop any side worthy of being a world champion side.
We treat a loss to Pakistan as our biggest failure. There is more to our sport than beating and losing to Pakistan....time for Indian public to show some maturity.

indian sport will continue to suffer for the next 50 yrs also as long as it is controlled by inept politicians and corruption and beggar like budgets ..
emotions and spirit isn't enough to compete at the top level and win..
u need similar training and facilities.. top notch stuff..
losing to pakistan and finishing among the top is much better..

Hockey

What we are talking here boss. India do well in cricket because every child is born in India with a bat. These days cricket is all about batting side time. I dont remember a single bowler in India, who could make batsman to pie in trousers like Shoib, Marshall or Lee.
Whatever we say, India can prove himself in any field where brain and concentration is required, but where physical strength is required we are fail. It is not a fault of us. It is genetics, It is weather and it is our food habits

not entirely true otherwise we would have never won golds in hockey before..
awell.. sport and fitness has changed completely..
genetics weather n food habits are partly to blame.. but with world class training and facilities.. everything is possible. especially in hockey...
give players facitilies of international level..and u will see changes..

.. china is winning olympic golds now in sport which was unthinkable years ago...

one guy mentioned that the team looked malnutritioned.

with the high cost of living and low income rate in a poverty ridden country like india, what do you expect. They were ofcourse weak and malnutritioned.
