Vijay Amritraj
by Ashwin Kempegowda on Jun 22, 2010 06:47 AM

Ramnath Krishnan, Amritrajs, Ramesh Krishnan, Paes, Srinath, Bhupathi had/have a great fan following. Sad that there is no news about Ramesh Krishnan. I still remember that Ramesh Krishnan and Paes were a great force in Davis Cup. One can see the passion for country in many of the matches played by Paes and Ramesh Krishnan in Davis Cup.

"In India, if a young player has earned US $100,000, the attitude is to put it away for a rainy day and save it, but not invest that money in themselves, such as getting a good coach from the States."

that is the real point with not only tennis but with many other games, and with business, career and academics also.

Vijay Amritraj - The Great Film Star !
by Edison John on Jun 21, 2010 08:56 PM  | Hide replies

Shocked by the title of this comment ! ???
Well, very few people would recollect that Vijay Amritraj had acted in the James Bond Film " Octopus " ( ??? ) I don't exactly remember the name of the film. But He was great in that film - Driving an autorickshaw through busy streets of India, with Bond as the passenger. I think, they were escaping from their enemies in an autorickshaw ( Thouroughly Indian film, Indian context.etc., ) It was good for a change to see James Bond escaping in an autorickshaw , instead of the fast and agile Mercs ( ?? ) or was it BMWs that was being used by Bond , in his films ?? Not that , I don't recollect his thrilling wins in Wimbledon and in all the Grand slam tournaments . I think, he reached upto quarter final or semi final in Wimbledon ( Forgive and correct me, if I am wrong ! ) Vijay was great and is still too, an all time Great. Son of the great Tennis prodigy, Ramanathan Krishnan, it was three generations of Tennis players " serving " INDIA. Long live India ! Long live Vijay Amritraj !

Vijay reached the quarter finals of Wimbledon two times, once in 1973 and 1981 and US Open quarterfinals in 1973 and 1974. The Bond film you mentioned is Octopussy. He has also acted in a few other films.

By the way, are you Jaideep Mukherjee ?? with "Jay " as nickname. How do you so spontaneously, bring out facts and figures of 1973 & 1974, & 1981, as though they are always at the tip of your tongue ????

yes, that escaping on a rickshaw was great. For once they showed that even in a poverty ridden country, one can escape and in a poverty ridden country, no matter how rich the visitors are, they don't have access to BMW, etc.

Also it was great to show his throwing money at the poor people of india. I think that must have been done live with real dollars. It must have made those Indian's day to have someone throw money at them. I was so happy to see the happiness in their face as Bond throws money at the poverty ridden people of India. I like seeing happy faces.

Ravi - Thanks ! You make me recollect the other scenes also, which I had forgotten. As you said, Bond throws money up in the air and the people move over to grab the notes ( dollars ?? ) Thus they clear the way out of the crowd. And escape, they did, in our lovely autorickshaws ! I distinctly remember that ! Thanks for bringing back those lovely memories to me ( My school days ?? ) Your sentiments about the poor of India getting happy for at least a day, was really thought provoking ! Bye, my dear friend ! Regds , Edison

I never got to play Tennis but followed it keenly almost entirely due to Vijay Amritraj while he was in the prime of this playing days. He was called the A of the ABC those days (Amritraj-Bjorg-Connors). He is a true Indian at heart and he loves to wear his Indian-ness with absolute pride. A great Indian indeed!

He was the key guy in bringing a lot of the top ranked players into India. And look at the way he was treated in this years edition of the Chennai Open....... Let politicians enter a place and it turns murky.....

Still an ace

Vijay has a pleasant voice and straight forward in his views, unlike the crooky sarcastic approach of Alan wilkins. They seem to be put together as a team since they balance each other.
