ARUN SINGH
Status of football in India
by ARUN SINGH on Jun 21, 2010 10:46 AM

It is typical indian psyce we talk emotionally when somthing exciting going around us. We forget when the event is over. we do lack to sustain any idea to a logical end. I am sure all football fever will evaporate once the world cup is over. U may be thinkinking I am a pessimist and see no hope in india as a sporting nation. No, the case is not like that- I also get excited to see indian reaching world cup football play ground. But the thing is we are not doing any preperation. May I suggusent that some body/ organisation take initiative to distribute a football to every village at least every year. Let us allow large participation and then expect a dream to happen.- aksingh

Atticus Finch
Zico...
by Atticus Finch on Jun 21, 2010 10:28 AM  | Hide replies

...the wonderful. Not for nothing was he called the White Pele, and anointed by Pele himself. If my memory isn't playing games, and if this isn't wishful thinking, during the 1986 World Cup, when Zico was injured and a doubtful starter, didn't Maradona send Zico a letter that began with the salutation 'To the King' and ended with a sign-off that said 'From the Prince'? Can anyone please confirm this?

Zico, my absolute favourite too! Remember his wonderful back-heel pass and the bicycle kick in the '82 (or was it '86) World Cup?

Zico is my all time favourite. He is a master of dibling, free-kicks & by-cycle kicks. If he could lift the world cup I would not have surpirsed to rename Pele as "Black Zico"

Good Write up
by Citizen on Jun 21, 2010 10:18 AM

Thats a good write up Anil. Thanks for sharing some great moments from football history. It was nice to read it. The final part of the column is what every sports loving Indian has in their thoughts. How can a nation of over a billion not produce a bunch of good footballers. I am sure there is good talent somewhere out there. Just need some genius brains and patriotic sportsperson from the yesteryears to pluck the talent out of the bush.

It all starts with a committed administration whose only goal is to make to the world cup competition. I really feel surprised that the smallest of countries like Honduras (we dont hear about them in any news at all) and Chile, Ivory coast making it to the world cup. Why not India??

Cant the administration bring in a great footballer from South America or Europe to coach us? Coach the guys for all 365 days and let them play more and more matches with the teams in Asia and then other continents. They will come of age one day then for sure.

Someone hearin??

yes, lets join hands for upliftment of Indian soccer, its hightime we cheer for Paul, Gourmangi and Sanju rather than being divided in to Brazil and Agrentina fans.
