PT Usha..good at Asian level, not on world stage
by sandeep kumar on Jul 22, 2010 08:55 PM  | Hide replies

Everyone talks about pt usha being the only indian world class athlete. But her achievements in the global stage are not much, if you look deeper. She won medals at asian meets and games, but at the global level, no olympic medals and no world championship medals. Those are equivalent to the grand slams in tennis or the world cup. She was good no doubt, but against the europeans and americans and jamaicans, no chance. Infact, anju george did betterm winning 2003 wc bronze. I feel saina nehwal will one day be called the best, and of course sania mirza has inspired thousands of girls by being the only indian to reach top 30, in an intensely competitive sport. PT usha, beenamol, wilson etc, are more or less the same level, but credit to them they won a lot on the asian stage.

You should remember PT Usha competed at a time when no facilities or coaching was available in India. She lost Bronze medal in Mosco olympics by 1/100th second. Also keep in mind Athletics is the mother sports and it is there in all teh countries.

Recently I read a statement from Milka Singh that if Usha was competing today and she had got the best coaching she would surely have won medals at international level.

It seems those days she and other athletes used to each chapathi and dal before the competition, No one used to care about food or other things
