The ball was past the goal keeper and above Suarez's shoulder. If he had not stopped the ball with his hand, the would have been a goal and Ghana would have been in the semi finals of the World Cup.
By denying the ball to enter the goal with his hand, he gave a chance to his team's goal keeper to stop Ghana's penalty kick.
Lesson...never give up...fight till the end...you never know what's in the store for you. You can learn from sports too.
It was the 120th minute of the game, a do or die situation. What Suarez did was for his country, that is what the World Cup stands for, the Country. He sacrificed himself. Maybe he knew that there would be dire consequences for his action. But he did it for his country. I am not a fan of either Uruguay or Ghana. I think playing for your nation means sacrifices. That's what Suarez did. Ghana got their penalty as a compensation. It was their "bad luck" or "incompetence" not to score. But Suarez's sacrifice took his nation into the semi-finals. And that is what matters in the end. I think I would have done the same for my country, even if it meant a life-time ban on me.

Hey dude.. Ur quotes echo the views of terrorists and suicide bombers!! There is a world called spirit which is above patriotism..
If u want to do it for ur country, just go and play as hard as u can but purely fair game.. By playing in a utterly disgusting way, he insulted himself and his own country name.. Even the sport itself!! Please dont support him by bringing nation name for his cheating game!!

Its not Suarez fault that Ghana missed the penalty. Any other team would have converted and nobody would be having this discussion. I see people saying that Suarez should be given multiple match bans for this. It would have made no difference, Suarez would have still done it. Also, allowing referees to award a goal will only cause further controversy in the future. As it is, referees are messing up. Next time, there will be massive discussion because the referee awarded a goal when he shouldn't have. The rules are fine as it is. Red Card penalty for handball. If you can't put a penalty away at this level, you don't deserve to progress.

If he dint bring his hand, there wouldnt ve been any penalty!! We can accept the refree making mistakes but not the player.. Spirit is more important while u play any sport...
I think Ghana should have been awarded a goal instead of a penalty,Ban Suarez for a couple of months ,FIFA should add it in its rule book if a player blocks a ball goin in the nets with his hands the other team should be awarded the goal and severe punishment for the blocking player.

its not kids playing in the gully.. it is international football. grow up.. a lot of things are at stake and defenders should do everything within rule book to stop a goal.. there is no prizes for fair play..

Feels like a kids game after reading ur comments... are you suggesting that stopping the ball using hands is in the rule books? Why not call all Urugway players as Goal Keepers then?
Sourez did a very bad action by blocking the ball by hands, otherwise could have put Ghana the only African nation to reach the semi finals in this world cup. He should have been penalized for his worng action with atleast next 5 international matches, or else any one else could do the similar un acceptable act.

For his counrty yes but for any football lover who believes in fairplay he is a villain of the last order. If this type of unsporting attitude continues on the field then the game will depend more on fouls and less on skills. FIFA should take a very serious look into such fouls and come up with a new ruling to allow the goal plus ban the culprit for two matches. Well thats how I feel about this.
