not a popular.............
by Ejaz Ali on Jul 02, 2010 09:38 AM  | Hide replies

Tennis is NOT a Popular sport in India.
Why should Tennis news become Head Line in India ??
Our Stars are Sachin MSD, Bhajji, Bindra etc
Federer May be great player but he is from spain ( euope), still Tennis players get Front page, Or Head Line.
How many Spainish , U.S, French News papers have given importance to Indian Stars and Cricket ??
Italy, Sweeden, Czec, Never mentions about Sachin and MSD.......

Tennis greats

Those who write off Roger, will have to eat their words.. because Federer will be back. Every great sportsmen pass through a lean phase. Only this year Federer had won the Australian open beating Murray on hard courts, which is Roger's favourite surface. So the coming season is hard courts and only time will tell. Everyone have their own choice as the greatest, nothing wrong, then its what the majority think.

He had already passed through a lean phase earlier. This time its the beginning of the end. I hope he takes that gracefully and exits with his head held high rather than going out whining about injury, health, weather etc.

Sampras the Great
by super hero on Jul 02, 2010 05:40 AM  | Hide replies

Sampras's carrer coincided with 4-5 all time great players. A great rivarly was going on in Wimbledon between Edberg and Boris Becker. And then there was Agassi.Jim courier was in peak with 4-5 titiles. Sampras came just trahsed everyone.
Logically speaking, my point is about the quality of the competitors. Dont say,Its Federers greatness that he didnt allow anyone else to come up. He won 16 titiles and Sampras 14. Sampras opponents edberg-agassi-becker-courier each have 5-8 titles too.
Look at federers opponents, how consistent they are.Sure federe wins the slams, but they should make to finals,semi-finals consistently. I can easily say there was no constant top 10 players when FED was swiping. He can take 1 position, but not all top 5 right?.. go see stats..in atp website, u can see players rankings for any given time.
Just the last 2 years, Nadal has risen, we have Murray,Djokovic. Now he has competition. The real competitors who are in constant top 10.But when he has competiiton he is not that great.and is clearly second to Nadal.

Well ur so called great Hewitt and Roddick, who is stopping them from becoming no.2 players? Are they loosing in Finals to Fed?

Dont just look at 16 vs 14 titiles. Even a kid can say Fed is greater if you are looking only at that stat.

Now he has cometition...when he is over 28! grow up man! If you can't praise someone for his achievements don't atleast degraded him! Playing 23 semi finals on a trot and 20 or 21 finals from them isn't a joke! Playing so many years without injury is a proof how hard he has worked on his fitness! If playing finals and semifinals is that much easy why anybody else or Nadal who is also playing for the last 7-8 years couldn't play all semifinals or finals?

very well said Naveen. Peoples not praising others effort, atleasr no need to degrade them.

playing 23 semis is not a joke with any opposition. no matter how many matches Nadal won against Fedex, but all are in clay court.

Federer Fading
by super hero on Jul 02, 2010 05:38 AM

Fed Fans Mind:
After Aus Open Fed looses ATP 500 Tourni:
"Wat the hell, its a small tourni, Fed doesnt care"

After Next Loss:
"Like we said, only Grand Slams Count"

After Next Loss:
"Well this is all on Clay Courts"

After French Open Loss:
"Well this is the first actual loss. Every player will have off matches. He will bounce back.Anyways Fed is no.2 on clay"

After ATP 500 on grass loss:
" Same thing, only slams count. All he lost is one slam match this year".

After Wimbeldon loss:
"Wat end of era..Just two matches lost.Rememeber only slams count. His leg is bad. Back is bad"

------------------
Other peoples Mind:
Well he didnt win any tourni this year afetr AO.Lost 7-8 matches to Tom and Diks.Definitely end of the era.

Hahhaha....very funny

Federer is undoubtedly the best until
by vidhya h on Jul 02, 2010 04:04 AM  | Hide replies

someone else comes to take his place which is going to take a long long time. I mean its un-imaginable to not see him in the last 4 thats its shocking coz we have been so used to it.But, in the end people need to understand that with age, ur movements become slower and ur consistency falters.

for people who say that his opponents were not that good, even IF it was the case ( i do not agree btw), he still has to show lot of consistency and self discipline to reach the last 4 in the last 5-6 years every single time. Thats unbeleivable and thats why tennis world is shocked.

he is truely a legend, everyone accepts that and its sad that his era has to come to an end. He made upcoming players raise their level to compete with him and made them hit angles which was not thought of in tennis before. He is a great boon to tennis coz he showed how tennis should be played and his off court personality won people over.

I can go on and on and I am truely blessed to see him play and I love watching Nadal too coz he too is up there and would strive to reach the level federer has reached. That would again raise the level of the rest of the players. Its all good for tennis.

Roger !!!
by GovindRaj Shenoy on Jul 01, 2010 10:03 PM  | Hide replies

Roger Federer losing in Wimbledon Quarters is such a shock, even the media is going to town with Obituaries of a Champion. This actually is an unintended tribute to the Greatest Tennis player we have known.

So many players and past Champions have lost matches and it never became an issue. Champions have lost in first round and not a whimper is heard. And a man who has made it to 23 successive Grand-slam Semi Finals and won more titles than any human living or dead is going through a rough patch; we have Pundits out with verdicts.

Perhaps Roger is not considered Mortal; that is what is amazing! Let us not forget he too is flesh and blood human like us! Age is an issue and sitting at the pinnacle can be a demotivating factor too. But this writer and a lot of experts over here are a tad too harsh in his 'Opinion' on one of the Finest Sportspersons of all times!

you are right Govid,
There are some pathetic brain who are trying to degrade his achievements saying that he didn't face quality opponent!
Playing 23 successive semi finals and 20 or 21 something finals out of these isn't a joke! People's horrified, shocked faces are telling the story. Even I'm still unable to believe that he has lost in quarter final!

It was not Berdich's best but Fedex's bad day
by anand kumar on Jul 01, 2010 08:13 PM  | Hide replies

Federer lost crucial points purely coz of the numerous unforced error's he committed..may be is sufering from nigglinh injuries but he did not see that as an excuse..Federer in his top form would have easily outclassed the hard hitting Berdich..Only Nadal in the present era is capable enough to challenge him.

Federer still very good, but past his peak. He still has that magic touch to make the game look easy and charm the spectators. Let us hope we will see some more of him before he calls it a day. But for me the best was John McEnroe, stats wise not so good, but for pure genius he was the best. He was the Maradona of tennis in his pomp
