this year, the asia- pacific(australian) open has not been good for the indians.somdev, yuki, & prakash amritraj failed to qualify for the main draw. sania got knocked out in the first round, similarly bhupathy & his foreign partner too could not go past the first round. but the bad news for india is, that two chinese girls are thru to the last eight of this year's open. how does a semi-barbaric nation like china, whose name did not figure on the tennis map of asia a few years ago, manage to get two of its girl players in this year's QF lineup. whereas india with a long tradition of playing tennis, having reached the davis cup finals on atleast three ocassions, cannot get a single player in the last 32 of men/womens draw in any grand slam event for the last so many years. it is learnt that china is using its clout and bidding for the shifting of the asia-pacific open(presently being hosted by the australians)to shanghai, and that most of asian nations are in its favour. in the coming years if these chinese girls continue to do well, the above may happen sooner than expected.
